Is there a way to make a fast travel option? Kind of like Skyrim. Where once you've visited a city or town you can then fast travel there from the menu. Thanks all!

If you want it from the menu, you'd need to add some script lines to add a new option to the menu and to handle the actual fast travel.

Or you can put a horse or anything else for a fast travel sprite, then use events to make options available or not, using:

Show Choice, Show Text, Control Switches and Teleport player to different maps.

You could, but I'm not sure if there's an efficient evented method of checking which options to show.

OK.It's really easy with events. You can do like this :

You have a choice of cities at first (You can use Tsukihime's choice script to make the choice window bigger)

Then, you can flip a switch whenever you enter an undiscovered city. Then make that switch as a condition in page 2 of the horse event and add it to the choice window.

Hope this helped !

You are 100% right.

While eventing is the easy way to do stuff, some things WILL be crude.

I mean there will be a HUGE volume of "event code" a lot of repetition maybe (common events can reduce that in a degree) but it is a really worse way to make things, than using a script.

But since script coding is a little intimidating for some users, I just gave an alternative suggestion.

As Skyrim doesn't use an world map travel mechanism, if you wanted to stick to events, you can use an evented world map without encounters, where players control an entity that can pass through everything, which is used to selected map nodes/towns/cities, and offer the player the ability to travel there using a dialog + choices, if they've discovered that location within the game.

It's also easy enough to disable this map using a switch, for when the player avatar is in an interior area, like a shop or dungeon.

Another idea you can think about is using an item based fast travel system. When i was making my old project, I had waystones for travel.

I used them as basically checkpoints, where if you got to a certain point you'd acquire a stone for being "familiar" with the area, and could travel there whenever you wanted from that point onward.

That's actually a fantastic idea. Quite a few of them. Thanks for all your input everyone, I think I know how I'm going to have it done.

As far as a menu command goes, like others said, it will require some scripting. Hime actually made a menu command manager script, which would make such a bit easier to script.

However people are overlooking a eventing method that would make a fast travel/teleport option, very, very, very easy, and efficients to event.

Take a SS of the world map, resize it in a art program to fit the screen. Make a new map in your game, use that map pic, as the map. Then at the location of every city or whatnot, make 2 page events(make page 2 require a switch to be on, and give you the option to teleport to such). Done, this way you don't need to deal with a million condition branches, and choices.

You can also change the char sprite on this map to a pointer, to polish it out.

In my game, I'm not even gonna have page one of any of the events have a graphic, so they'll become visable as you find them. I'll also be having every possible location being shown on the map, if you have discovered such, even the places you can't teleport to, exc. This way you'll also have a map to help you navigate in general.
