In this thread we share our favorite boss battles, be they either a final boss or some lowly miniboss. If you are writing about a boss in a game that is recent, please put it in a spoiler tag!

My favorite boss battle is Gruntilda from Banjo-Kazooie. Talk about the perfect "final exam" boss. The battle itself is pretty challenging, requiring you to use almost all of the moves you have learnt. The music is beyond epic and segues into a truly satisfying final cutscene.

I like M. Bison from Street Fighter in General, the more unfair, impossible, and overpowered, the better.

Another nice battle, this time the final Robotnik battle from Sonic colo(u)rs. Just like the Gruntilda battle I mentioned in the OP, the player has to utilize all of the abilities given to beat the final boss. The battle also comes with the added twist of the villain being able to use them too! The fight is pleasingly cinematic, with an awesome remix of the main theme. I also like the slow-mo effect as Sonic whales on Robotnik´s mecha, giving the two nemesises time to lock eyes. The only low point is that the battle is kinda easy compared to the Gruntilda battle mentioned above.

Do I like that battle too? OF COURSE

Too many to remember right now, but I think the Devil May Cry 3 boss battles were pretty cool, especially the last one!

Also, Olgierd from Witcher 3 Hearts of Stone battle was pretty engaging for me, but mainly because of the buildup and backstory.

Some of my favourite boss fights from the top of my head:

Dark Souls: Ornstein & Smough, Manus, Artorias.

Darkest Dungeon: Unstable Flesh.

Castlevania: Balore (Aria of Sorrow), Gergoth (Dawn of Sorrow), Legion (several installments), Medusa (Lament of Innocence).

Axiom Verge: Gir Tab.

Binding of Isaac: Monstro, Larry Jr.

Sonic: Starlight zone boss (Sonic 1), Casino zone boss (Sonic 2), Oil Ocean zone boss (Sonic 2).

FF7: Lost Number.

The final boss from Final Fantasy XIII-2 was fun, though really long (it took me like over two hours... >_>)

Gergoth was indeed a phenomenal boss, with its scary-looking design and the mechanics of the fight (a giant monster in a tiny room).

Dawn of Sorrow had some really nice boss fights, like Puppet Master and Paranoia. Just too bad it forced you to draw silly magic seals every time you beat a boss.

Lavos from Chrono Trigger

The shell of that giant alien parasite thing first imitates a lot of bosses fought through the game, then when you finally beat it and enter inside it, it has a whole dungeon inside! At the end of the dungeon you have to fight against its real body, then after you destroy its body you have to fight against its core, all the battles are challenging and pretty epic too.

Luca Blight from Suikoden 2

The bastard is a formidable adversary, it takes a whole ambush during a night raid, 3 groups of 18 people, and a deadly 1vs1 final match against the protagonist to take him down. He is just a man with an armor, a sword and a Fire Rune but unbelievably powerful.

Mega Satan from The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Can summon all the 7 Super Deadly Sins, all the 4 Horsemen of Apocalypse, can transform into a black angel, shoots everywhere bullets, rays, smashes the ground causing earthquakes, spits fire and basically throws at you everything he has and from every damn direction. He is unbelievably hard if you are not prepared enough.

Big Mama from Rayman Origins

Made me swear so many times, she is so hard and unpredictable too at first. You gotta learn the pattern of her movements to be able to survive, bear in mind that you can die with 1-2 hits too and fall into the lava easily during the fight.

Zeikfried from Wild Arms Alter Code: F

First you face him in a challenging battle on this space colony, then after you beat him he gets absorbed by the Mother of all Demons becoming Motherfried, this supposedly final boss fight is pretty hard if you are unprepared. When you finally win the battle you think the game is finished, so the party (being still on a space colony) tries returns to their home planet through a teleporter, and while being into the transition between the two dimensions he appears again, claiming that he destroyed the Mother's body and is transformed into something else. His re-appearance is totally unexpected and how you fight him is pretty epic (in very unstable Subspace basically).

I like Kefka from FFVI too and all the battles from Shadow of the Colossus.

There is so much more I can go on forever here.

The one i've enjoyed the most was a Parasite, a boss from the MOBA Dawngate. It felt like i was facing a MMO boss but it was fun as well cuz we had the pressure of being wiped by the enemy team wile Parasite would keep aiming at us.

Sad that the game got canceled.

Oh, that one is really nice as well. Rayman Origin is fantastic!

Speaking of multiplayer online game I feel that I have to mention the team fortress halloween bosses. The horseless headless horsemann is the first and still best one since he has a moderate amount of health and do not interrupt the game and force people to fight him if they do not want to. I also have to give props to Merasmus, since he is hilarious.

While I really want to put BOF4 final boss in here, there's something even more fabulous and moody :DD

Back when there's no way to save game, it's pretty savage to get thru all the level to meet this last boss fight back then.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Pokemon yet. And no, i'm not gonna talk the obvious "FIGHTING YOUR PAST SELF". I mean yeah, that battle was insanely good and tough, but the last time i had a fun adrenaline rush in Pokemon was when i fought the final battle in Black and White. I was evenly matched with that guy and it was very close, i loved it to death!

Sadly i couldn't re-create that intense moment because i already knew what was going on and oh OH i'm not talking about Ghetsis i'm talking about the good fight against N of course! lol

Also this is going against my own rules here, because i think extremely random elements are always crap, but i severely like the optional battle against Ozma in FF9. The only Element in that fight i don't like is the random Meteor 9999 damage... >:(

@GoodSelf

Oh, never heard of that one before. Looks really nice (although I probably can´t play it since I get nausea easily)!

Final confrontations in point and click games tend to divide fans since they generally do not enjoy action sequences, but I think the monkey island series solves this well. There is a sense of urgency but there is no real danger of losing, the sense of danger being more about the main character enduring torturing rather than death.

Star Dream Soul OS (True Arena) from Kirby: Planet Robobot. When you realize what you're fighting is some sort of fusion between a man that only wanted to see his daughter again, the machine he built to try to fulfill his wish, that absorbed his mind and wants to erase history, a clockwork star that grants wishes and a monster which used the clockwork star to become extremely powerful. When you get to fight the Core, which is a heart, you can hear the man's screams as he gets deleted from existence. and this ladies and gentlemen is a kirby game

the Masked Man fight from Mother 3 is also good. It's a struggle between you and your brother which has turned into a mindless killing machine. And your (dead) mom's ghost tries to stop you two from fighting. And it ends with Masked Man revealing himself and then killing himself.

there's more but I don't remember

Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start

This.

Explanation (in case you didn't know)

Having not played a console game for at least 12 years, this freaked me out a bit! xD The 90s had some really cool stuff!

Totally. How Kojima created such difficult bosses. I like The End from MGS3. My bro tooks 2~4 hours to find him and......damn, the boss likes to hiding and  prepare to snipe.

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving!
