My favorite old rpg series is probably the Spyro The Dragon series on the PSX (PS1) I've played them all, but my sister fully finished them :D
Spyro the Dragon isn't an RPG. It's a platformer, like Jak & Daxter. RPGs are like Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Dragon Age, Breath of Fire, etc. etc.

...god now I feel old. I never used to consider FF9 as one of the "old" RPGs, but I guess now it is and buuuhh where did the time go ;____;

So yeah, absolute favourite is FF9; I've played that game a ridic amount of times, and it is my all time favouritest game ever. XD

Other old games I love: FF4 and Chrono Trigger are really high up on the list! FF Mystic Quest is up there, too, but only because it was my first ever RPG and I have crazy nostalgia attached to it. Going back now, though, it actually had a lot of really awesome ideas as far as gameplay went, especially with dungeon exploration. I also love it because I can easily 100% clear it in an afternoon, which is super theraputic for me. XD I take comfort in familiarity!

This one isn't that old (I thiiiink it's either 2004 or 2006?), but I've been replaying it recently, so I'm gonna give a shout out to Children of Mana! Not especially engaging in terms of story or originality, but the dungeon crawl is pretty mindless and fun, which makes it a nice game to pick up and play for fifteen minutes when I need a break from something. Also, there are crazy lesbian undertones when you play as Tamber, which makes me super happy. (RPGs need more queer romances okay)

I loved Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force II.

Phantasy Star III I loved the concept (the generational concept) but I think the gameplay was super clunky feeling.

My favorite RPG as a kid was definitley Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. It was a pretty easy game, but it had a fun battle system, memorable characters, great graphics and music, plenty of minigames and secrets, and no random encounters or massive but empty world maps. It helped that I was already a huge Mario fan then. I probably wouldn't have payed much attention to the genre if the game never existed.

So many to choose from...

I'm between Final Fantasy 6, Lufia 2 and Phantasy Star IV as my all-time favorite from the SNES era and before.

Star Ocean is a pretty damn good RPG that is little known, and The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang is an action RPG that's made of pure awesomeness :)

I never could get into the Star Ocean series, I never played the older ones (One on the PS2 was the first I played).

Some of my favorite old rpgs are apart of my collection cause I only buy the ones that I really love, so it's a mighty rediciouls list of them, but here's the top five for me.

Lufia II

Final Fantasy IV

Suikoden II

Wild ARMS

Star Ocean 2

Those games kinda molded what I love in RPGs and stuff like that, I could write whole essays on those games and why I adore them so.

The battle system is for my its main dark point, I 'am talking about Star ocean 2.

The thing, that I like about Star ocean 1 & 2 is the cut-scenes that trigger when you enter a town while pressing squarre.

These cute scenes are nice because some characters have a personal optional quest or even interact with each other without the hero, etc...

I have to say FFIII:USA / VI:Japanese. Too many things about it to say why, stories per character, different plots and sections to choose from, music (for its time), etc... PLUS OMG an Opera game! I feel like Frasier! I could go on and on...

I agree, amazing game. One of the best FF's. Although it's FF6 in both US and Japan now, they released it as FF6 for the Game Boy Advance and on Playstation 1. ;)

Final Fantasy 3 (The one formally only in Japan) is now available on Nintendo DS and iOS as a 3D remake (3D as in models, not the 3DS thing.)

Sorry bad habit, I forgot about the remakes for DS, and PS1. I actually played every one of the series up to XII.

I define old as anything before 2002. Mostly because my favorites fall in those years as demonstrated.

1995: EarthBound

1996: Super Mario RPG

1997: Fallout

1998: Final Fantasy 7: Now for the PC!, Baldur's Gate, Fallout 2, Lords of Magic: Special Edition.

2000: Blaze and Blade: Eternal Quest, Baldur's Gate 2, Daikatana, Deus Ex, Ogre Battle 64, Nox,

2001:Arcanum, Anachronox.

However my current favorite NEW RPG that plays like and OLD RPG is Black Sigil: Blade of the Exiled.
