I'd have to say post apocalyptic, but in a specific, non-general kind of way. I enjoy games like Fallout, the Metro games, the Metal Max games( I really wish they'd get more love in the U.S) And even Shin Megami Tensei. I enjoy murdering zombies, don't get me wrong, but I prefer them to be part of the package and not the whole thing. I have a distinct image in my brain and when I think "post-apocalyptic wonderland", I think of things like:

•Mutants/Zombies/Mutated Zombies ( animal and human) or Supernatural creatures

•Raiders/Bandits/Gangs

•Settlements made from the husk of things that used to be

•A world that is no longer the same, yet includes the fragments of the familiar

•A lot of improvised weapons and the occasional, coveted piece of old tech

•The collapse of society as we know it and the rise of something more primitive

•Modern currency being rendered useless and replaced(sometimes by something hilarious such as bottle caps)

•Cyberpunk elements

What are some of your favorite video game settings?

I'd recommend Borderlands and Shadowrun if post-apocalyptic and cyberpunk worlds are to your liking. :)

One of the most recent games I played was BioShock 1, so I suppose I'm drawn to modern fantasy.

I thought the first BioShock aged pretty well. I haven't played the sequels and the remastered versions yet.

Did you play all the Shadowrun games? I only bought Dragonfall; it was quite awesome. :D

I maybe a bit too hyped and biased at the moment, but I absolutely love Dishonored's steampunk setting.

I loved the first Dishonored game. I really hope the sequel lives up to the hype. :)

@kenibatz, I agree with you on how well the first game holds up. I haven't played the remasters yet either, but I wouldn't mind checking them out. As far as the sequels go, Bioshock 2 kind of improved on the gameplay aspect, the story wasn't as crazy, but there were a quite a few steps forward from a gameplay perspective; Bioshock infinite on the other hand kind of streamlined some of the gameplay a bit, but I thought that the story was pretty awesome.

Also, I have all of the new Shadowrun games, I used to play the SNES and Genesis games and I have the first edition book for the table top RPG lol; I haven't invested too much time in the newer games, but I've enjoyed what I played of them! :)

@madmink, another game that I really enjoyed! :)

I've been wanting to play BioShock Infinite because the story was highly praised, but the system requirements are too steep for my laptop. :D

The Shadowrun world has always fascinated me. I'm hoping that--someday--there will be a Shadowrun game that uses the open world style of Fallout 3. :D

Sci-fi settings of all kinds are my thing. Particularly:

- Cyberpunk and any kind of dark/dystopian urban futuristic settings

- Space operas spanning multiple planets with rich alien civilisations

- Utopias under threat

Other than sci-fi, I like me some dark fantasy, preferably with unique elements and to be as far from typical epic fantasy settings as possible. Basically, any serious fantasy setting that isn't trying to be a Tolkien copycat.

If it makes sense or is fun enough i'm fine with it though i'm not a huge fan of sci-fi.

But i have a special place for medieval and mythological settings, even if it's no so accurated as it should be.

In general, I like games that really put time into worldbuilding. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask had a great setting. Zelda games in general do a pretty good job with the worldbuilding and creating a specific feeling for each game.

I like urban fantasy/sci-fi the best. Persona 4 is a perfect example and I would say Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch counts as well (at least the maps that takes place in cities/industrial districts).

I always like cities in the sky, from Paper Mario's Glitzville to Miyazaki's Laputa to Bioshock's Columbia. There are some must have details, such as sweeping cloud formations and interesting sky-creatures, but every city has it's own spin on the concept.

I like creative settings the most. I like when there's an element of fantasy in a setting but I'm quite sick of the generic fantasy setting: I've seen enough D&D & LotR ripoffs already. So I either like fantasy with a creative spin on it (game examples include Pillars of Eternity & Tyranny) or genre mashups, like Shadowrun's dark cyberpunk fantasy or Vampire: the Masquerade's (actually part of the World of Darkness universe) gritty modern setting with fantasy elements (vampires and magic, y'know). Aside from that, there are not that many game using that setting but I really like steampunk and the general look and feel attached to it.

I like fantasy, preferably dark fantasy and dystopian settings. I really liked the world map of Dark souls 1, which had beautiful infrastructures and was in a single contained area (not really a vast world) but each section within connected so well with each other and it was very well thought out imo.

I love desert fantasy worlds like in Final fantasy 12 and love different races habitats. The Ivalice universe of FF is hands down one of my favs.

Artyum?! Nah, that's the character from Metro series. Yup, I like the game but less about the setting.

I prefer medieval sand-land / dessert, ethnic village, and modern.

Probably the Warhammer 40k setting, sure there have been some bad 40k stories, but when it's good it's great.

It depends on the genre, really. I'm generally not a big fan of sci-fi, but I think futuristic themes can work out very well in FPS games.

If I'm have to pick my favourites though, I'd have to say the fantasy and steampunk settings. I find they work very well in RPG's, MMO's and RTS.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
