What are your favorite art styles in game characters? What aesthetic are you looking for when you are choosing a game to play?
I personally like games that are heavily stylized. I love stuff like Little Nightmares, Don't Starve, Limbo etc which are all very unique looking games.
What about you? If you have more than one style that is highly appealing to you, feel free to share. It would be interesting to see what people enjoy

The art style usually don't always be on my top consideration. I can take any art style as long as it suit with the game theme, and I like the game concept. But I do generally like cartoonish style, including anime, caricature, chibi, stylized (Child of Light for example).

I don't always impressed with 3D and/or realistic, unless if it's involved a space related / scifi games. I usually hyped when seeing starship model lol. One on the top of my mind is Strike Suit Zero for example. But if it take a place in modern setting, I probably don't care much. But a high fantasy (like Kingdom of Amalur) is in my liking too

I dont have a fav art style, I like anything as long its pretty to look at.
I usually get more drawn by the story or the way maps look like as I like to be immersed in the game's world

Perhaps it's because I am gaming dinosaur, but I really can't say I have a favorite art style. For that matter, I can't even say I have a least favorite art style.

So much has changed over the decades I've been playing; & much of what we have now in 2018, was simply inconceivable in the days of The Tank Game, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Space Invaders, Super Mario Brothers, etcetera.

So I tend to evaluate more from a "How does everything come together" perspective, more than anything else.

I can really appreciate the heavily stylized art, so long as it's not too jarring to look at and so long as it fits the atmosphere and theme of a game (for example a game about serious themes done in a cartoony style can be hard to take seriously). (Some good examples of heavy stylized art I like - Darkest Dungeon, Axiom Verge, Apotheon, Lethal RPG: War)

However, I realise that heavily stylized art is not always possible, so I am quite happy with realistic looking games as the next preference, just so long as they're not too dull and grey. I don't mind anime style so long as it's not too overexaggerated. As for chibi, I can enjoy a game with chibi style for sure, but I definitely don't prefer it.

Kind of depends. I've seen a few instances where more unrealistic styles actually help with the creepyness. For example, Doki Doki Literature Club is terrifying and has a pretty cute art style. Everyone takes it seriously because it's actually scary. However, games like Higurashi no Naku Koro ni are a little too chibi I find. I think the key is if you're going to go extremely cartoony in a creepy/serious game, it's best to tie it into more of a surrealist style.

Yeah, a specific type of cuteness that has a creepy flavour to it can work, but with stuff like that, it's a hit or miss, and if some minor detail is not done right, it might just fail to pull off the atmosphere you're going for. But regarding serious themes, I also meant themes such as death/loss of loved ones, depression, suicide, organized crime, war, and so on. Things like that, in my opinion, work a lot better when the visual style is also gritty and dark to accommodate them, as opposed to say cute smiling chibis or the like.

I like anime style mostly. Tales of Berseria, and Fairy Fencer F are perfect examples of what I mean.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
