Hi guys. Not sure if this is allowed, but I'm doing it anyways for personal pleasure whether or not it can be publicized.
REMAKE
I am remaking the entirety of Final Fantasy 1 on RPG Maker MV and so far, it's looking pretty good. The original Final Fantasy was known for its tension due to the game's limitations (1. limited inventory space, 2. limited magic, 3. highly variable damage). I disliked the PSP / GBA versions of the game because it makes things too easy.
PREQUEL
My original intent for this remake project is to make a prequel to Final Fantasy 1. It's a character driven story about Garland's descent into madness and the reason he became the main villain.
So you get to play the villain whose questioning everything about reality.
REMAKE NOTES:
I have been working on this for 11 days straight (12 hours a day) from RMMV demo to full version (paying full price before the damn Black Friday discount). My aim is to recreate the feel of the original game with upgraded graphics and mechanics. So far, I found the RPG Maker Engine to be highly compatible with the first Final Fantasy. So this is a list of accomplishments so far in making it happen;
- Imported all of the Monster's Stats Database
- Imported all of the Player Character's Classes Database (HP, Atk, etc.)
- Inputted all of the Items, Weapons, and Armors by hand
- Imported Art Assets from the PSP version.
- Implemented the multiple hit mechanics
- Implemented most of the original spells
- Implemented the original FF1 formulas for (HP, Atk, Def, etc.) as best as I could.
However, there were a lot of complications with the formulas already so I had to make adjustments for balance purposes and gameplay expansion. Here's a list of changes I've done so far.
- Minor adjustments to Monster Stats (still ongoing)
- Minor adjustments to PC Class Stats (finished but might need tweaking)
- Moderate Adjustments to Items (Added more from the sequels)
- Added more weapons (200 total) (Trying to keep the original progression rate intact)
- Added a ton more armor (200 total) (including accessories)
- Accessory items from later sequels (FF6 and up) (120 total)
- Spells needed to be tweaked (using MP system for now. Will switch to slots later when I learn how)
- Implemented Ramza's Blocking Mechanics (Like the fighter needs it)
- Implementing Combat Skills for Fighter, Thief, and Monk (Still ongoing) (New Skills plus skills from FF4 and upwards)
- Implemented elemental and state resistances and weakness that are logical to its type to; 1. Monsters, 2. Weapons, 3. Armor. (A lot of it imported from very specific D&D rules and Skyrim Mods)
- Implemented special attacks to Monsters that are logical to its type (still ongoing)
- Removed dumb spells that made no sense and replaced them with others from the series; and buffed up poorer spells.
- Implementing elemental states similar to Divinity Original Sin series (hot, wet, cold, shock, etc.) along with their status effects from interacting elements. (Lightning + Wet = Stunned)(Just started)
The results so far;
Man... this is one hardcore hard game! In some instances, I win easily. Other times, monsters wipe me out pretty bad. I'm tempted to smooth the difficulty curve, but I get goose bumps when two strikes wipes out half my group from a random encounter. Here's the notes results from the changes above.
- Monsters feel like the FF1 monsters. Woot! Some are really weak. Others too strong. But that's the math the original FF1 formulas gave to me. I might adjust them if it's too unfair.
- The classes feel like FF1 exactly. So fun!
- More items! A lot more items! But I adjusted their prices to be more expensive. There's no easy street for this game!
- More weapons! More Armor! Most aren't stronger than the strongest. A lot are for early game and others are for looting and selling. I tried to use every weapon and armor name in the book (while logically omitting some) and it looks really cool.
- Haven't finished the accessories yet. But they are game changers against monsters.
- The spells feel good after some tweaking. More testing needed. (I still do the FAST / TMPR tactic for my fighters)
- I love the Number of Hit mechanics and the Auto Blocking feature.
- Funny, I haven't encountered much elemental states in the monsters I was testing with. I was mostly spamming attack until I couldn't. Monsters either died quickly or killed me quickly.
- One big difference in classes was the Thief. His AGI affected his 1. Hit Rate, 2. Evasion, 3. Critical Hit Rate, and 4. Critical Evasion, and made him pretty lethal.
- The Hit Rate vs Evasion Rate mechanics inputted feels weird. There's a lot more misses than I was expecting. Same with the Magic.
- Spellcasters like the Mage and the Mind Flayers terrify me. These are very lethal creatures.
- Beware of all metal armor. They lower your Electricity resistance and your evasion.
I think that's all I have for notes for now. I'll be constantly working on this for weeks.
PREQUEL PROJECT
My original intent for this remake project is to make a prequel to Final Fantasy 1. It's a character driven story about Garland's descent into madness and the reason he became the main villain.
So you play the villain.
He, first, wakes up from a dream about being Chaos incarnate. It bothers him so much that he becomes detached from people and reality. He starts a quest to speak to the Elemental Crystals to find out why he is prophesized to being the destroyer of worlds. He does not want this fate imposed on him and resists it. But the more he resists, the more mad he becomes. Until eventually turning on his own friends, abducting Princess Sara, meeting himself in the past, and dying to the Warriors of Light.
His story mirrors that of Cecil's journey in FF4 but as a polar opposite. His journey gets darker with every turn. And the real meat of the story is the friction he has with his party members and the dark choices he makes.
I wanted to greatly expand on the world so I planned at least 30 smaller locations that amplify the world setting (Farms, Lighthouses, Fishing Villages etc.)
I don't have everything figured out yet, but I just wanted to throw this out there to see reactions and to see who wants to help. I can't do this alone due to my limited skills.
Please keep in mind that I am not a modder of any sort or fashion. I have no coding or programming skills. But I do have a very high IQ and can read and manipulate code I see. I am a hobbyist artist so I can use some art tools (paint.net and krita) to do some basic to moderate work. I have gone through some very difficult tasks getting the data into RPG Maker already.
Right now, I'm dead tired and I want to sleep.
So, cheers!
