Hi all,

So some of you may be familiar with arguably the most hated Final Fantasy of all time, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (AKA Final Fantasy USA). Well, good news! I'm remaking it! Complete with revamped graphics and sound, higher difficulty, an enhanced script and, of course, lots of extra content.

The story of Mystic Quest goes like this, for those unfamiliar with it (I pretty much copied it from Wiki):

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest take place on a single continent of an unnamed world, which is divided into four distinct regions: Foresta, Aquaria, Fireburg, and Windia. The welfare of each region is determined by the state of one of four shining crystals: Earth, water, fire, and wind, respectively. For centuries, the Focus Tower had stood at the heart of the world. It had been a center for trade and knowledge, and the world's people met there to peacefully settle their differences. But on one warm summer day, powerful monsters stormed the Tower, stole the four crystals, and then took off with the magical coins that kept the Tower's doors unlocked. The monsters began consuming the power of the crystals; they grew in strength while the world began to decay. An old prophecy tells that at the time the "Four Heavenly Kings" steal the power and divide the world behind four doors, a knight will appear to vanquish the darkness.

What I Need

For my team, I need mappers more than anything. Duplicating some of the more complicated maps from the original Final Fantasy Mystic Quest is just beyond my skill level. I will provide PNGs of the original maps for reference.

I'll also need scripters to help me install Mystic Quest's unique rear-view battle system with front-facing enemies and create some tricky events (like moving floors, elevators, etc.)

Battler artists. I admit the chances of me getting help with this are slim, but the old 16-bit battlers just don't mesh well with the new, higher-resolution VX Ace graphics. Even though I'll provide PNGs of all the monsters (most of which are just palette swaps of eachother), the trick is they all have multiple animations. One of when they're in their normal state, and another one or more when they're near death. Its a lot of work, but if somebody out there thinks they're up for it, I'll be thrilled.

What I Can Offer

Despite still being something of a noob with Ace, I can offer my skills as a writer to anyone who's working on a script. I have a BS degree in journalism with a minor in English and used to freelance write for a living, so let's just say I'm not half-bad.

I'm happy to answer any questions or concerns with this request.

Mystic Quest is a lot better then people give it credit for.

The main issue is the amount of content(omg the amount of content in Mystic Quest is pathetic, it feels like It's 1/3 of a game, not a full game), and sprites on map(the Pyramid being one of the most annoying maps ever created, due to such). As for difficulty, that's every FF game's problem(aside from FF 5, and the FF 4 The After Years) sigh.

If I wan't so busy with my own mapping, I would love to help, but as you probally know, mapping is extremely time consuming, so mapping for 2 different games at the same time is a no no.

Good Luck though.

Yami's Battle Symphony Engine may be what you need for that "Mystic Quest" style battle system.

I applaud you for taking on this task.  While I must admit, I never actually finished Mystic Quest, I did very much enjoy its unique world approach, and it's battle areas.  I discovered it long after FF4 and FF6, so I never got to give it the time it deserved.  Should the time come that you need a tester for this game though, I would be more than happy to help!  Good luck with this new endeavor!  Many blessingz!  :)

well the thing with mystic quest is that it was an intro game for the rpg genre. so it feeling like 1/3 of a game is because of that. i have also been working on a remake, with no real luck due to how bad i am with making sprites. so i'm glad to see someone really getting out there with this, i would like to see a bit on the expansion side, meaning maybe a customized story after the "end" of the game, but a remaster would be just as good, with that note, back to playing mystic quest for the 80th time XD

that being said, if you would like any help with it i would be more than willing to within the best of my abilities.

What progress have you made in your remake so far? And what can you do?

Seriously, PM me an outline of what you have and screenshots (if available). I'm just curious right now.

I'm one of the few who enjoyed Mystic Quest when it came out. It's a great game for breaking newbies into rpg's without making things too difficult. The problem, however, was how they marketed it, which essentially was insulting to the majority of Western gamers.

Still, this was one of my best memories on the SNES: Along with Chrono, Final Fantasy VI (3 in the US), and LoZ: Link to the Past. To be clear, I've been playing rpg's long before, with Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, and Crystalis on the NES, so I didn't need a breakthrough rpg, but I still had fun playing this game.

For your battlers, I'd go with Tyler Warren's if you can part with the cash. You may even be able to tone down the battle backgrounds a bit with GIMP or Photoshop, so they blend better.

It's going to be cool seeing 2 remakes as I have been in the process of re-doing this game myself. :)

A fan remake sounds interesting. Though both fan games and fan remakes share this kind of problem that they are either not finished or they turn out bad usually. I seriously recommend taking your time with your potential team before releasing anything.

TDS actually has an exact mystic quest battle system but it is for his use only at the moment.

I would talk to him first to see what you and he could work out. He is over at RMRK only as far as I know.

Oh my, I remember playing and even finishing Mystic Quest, it was bad, REALLY bad, then again as it was said above it is the perfect beginner rpg. Well you cannot do any worse then it.

It WAS primarily a tutorial for RPGs, but it also introduced some novel features that haven't been in a Final Fantasy since (that I'm aware of). My goal is to turn Mystic Quest from a beginner's RPG into a serious RPG. I think Atelier and I are gonna try to combine what we have together. Anyone else on board?

BTW, Diva, you're hot. Just sayin.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
