So what is Fire Emblem? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_Emblem

Fire Emblem is a fantasy tactical RPG (sometimes called SRPG) developed by Intelligent Systems. It start on the Famicom in 1990 in Japan. The series didn't start in America and other countries until after Super Smash Bros. Melee came around with Marth and Roy, they were originally planned to be in the JP version until last-minute arrangements. (it did have a dubbed 2-episode anime before then though). Nintendo and Intelligent Systems decided to release Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword in America after that. Most of the Fire Emblems since then translated into English (legally) after that. The most recent being Awakening for the 3DS.

And, yeah, that's the most part for history class.

So, do you like Fire Emblem? What's your first? What's your favorite?

I love having conversations about my wooden animal figurine collection during the heat of battle.

I play it from time to time. My favourite character is in my avatar, but my favourite is Rekka No Ken ( Blazing Sword ), since it was the first one I played, but Genealogy of the  Holy War/ FE4 ( released on the SNES in 1996, never released in English, you need an English patch to play it ) may become my favourite soon.

Favourite class: Swordmaster, GBA Heroes

Favourite Lord:  Sigurd/Hector ( Lords are the main characters in FE, btw :) )

Least Favourite Lord: Ike/Roy

Least Favourite game: Sword of Seals, Radiant Dawn. The latter also has the biggest Mary Sue and Gary Stu ever seen in an FE game.

So yeah, that's my 2 cents.

Thanks for posting, for a second I thought this thread was dead shortly after it started.

I've been meaning to try Genealogy of the Holy War and a few of the other older Fire Emblems through a patch, especially Binding Blade. The Fire Emblems I've played are Blazing Sword, Sacred Stones, Gaiden (that's how you spell it right?), Radiant Dawn and Awakening. I've been meaning to get my hands on Path of Radiance but that game is rare and quite expensive.

I always have a hard time picking favorites outside of Jalen...

Most recently, I've been playing Awakening. It's such a beautiful synthesis of so many mechanics from previous games that I loved. Also one of the first to get around the "singular character trait" issue that tends to plague the series' writing. I'm a stickler and like the old version of animu art previous games used, but Awakening looks quite nice and the battles are super fun to watch. It's super fun in general! Does lots of things I like. Could probably talk about it a while. However, they have no excuse for how they handled mission objectives. Or Nowi. NONE.

Mechanically, as cruel as it is I really have an... affection of sorts for FE5/Thracia 776. Here's a fun LP of it, for anyone interested. SA has quite a few FE games for those who want to see the JP-only ones! It has such infamous moments like heal staves missing.

The first FE I played was Path of Radiance. At the time, I became hopelessly obsessed with it and played it so many times I have the cutscenes just about memorized. I really don't know why! My best guess is because it's the first one I played, so it left a strong impression. These days it's far from my favorite. I remember when Radiant Dawn came out I shunned it for some silly reason or another, AND I DEEPLY REGRET IT. I've read an LP of it by now and I ended up liking it MORE than PoR, ha ha. I'd see it for sale all the time and turn up my nose at it, and now that I WANT to play for myself, I can never find it... c'est la vie! I'll probably cave and order it online sometime.

Recently, a friend pointed out the Fe/iron connection, and now every time I type FE I think I'm talking about iron.

Fire Emblem is one of my favorite tactics series, I really like the character vignette's in the middle of battles like I tried to point out earlier. I don't get much play out of them since they're pretty brutal though. I get heart-broken and stop playing as soon as anyone dies since they tend to be weirdly anti-scumm for Japanese games. I would totally fail the Bridge Officer's Test.

Ah, yes, I'm not a fan of perma - death either, one of the greatest parts of fire emblem games in this decade (there's only two of them :p ) is casual mode. I remember resetting the Wii every time someone in Radiant Dawn died (unless they sucked, and come to think of it, that's quite a few characters).

Oh? Which ones have casual mode? I've only played the GBA games.

Ahem. Like Meg, Fiona, Lyre or Astrid? XD Poor Meg, she gets a lot of fan hate. The fact that 80% of RD's cast had very little avalibility (like those four ) made things worse ( and their base stats were so bad that you couldn't even train them decently even with BEXP. Unless the player doesn't care about turns, of course. Like me ).Not so bad if your units was a Gorilla Merc or a Fail Brigader ( my derogatory nicknames for those two factions XD ). Which most players tend to use.

RD's gameplay is great, but I really despised the main characters and the story was messed up and rushed. Splitting it into 4 parts wasn't the way to go...

Shin Monshō no Nazo ~Hikari to Kage no Eiyū on the DS (japan only) and Awakening, in casual mode there is no penalty for dying unless the main character dies which still triggers a game-over, but that's it, not a problem with overpowered Chrom and Robin in Awakening.

@Luchino

And lets not forget about Micaiah, though if you actually train her, she can be a great unit. But it's quite hard since she is the only character in the game who starts on LV.1 it's also very tough to get her to LV20 by the time she changes classes, even harder to get to LV20 again when she changes classes AGAIN since you use her in like, four or five chapters before then.

However the four units you named are the ones I have the most problems with.

Favourite class: Archer, Hero, Swordie & Mage.

Favourite Lord: Lucina

Least Favourite Lord: Chrom

Least Favourite game: Awakening so far.

I don't like Awakening's game system, especially the re-classing which lops of EXP and how you can only access certain skills in other classes. I liked RD's skill system the best for that. It gets tiring in Awakening and not to mention the millions of people making units over-powered. There's only 1-4 units I'd do that for and one of them is Spot Pass and the other a DLC. Lucina & MU would be the only too in the game itself I'd go that far for. I quite liked Sword of Seals though I didn't find myself attached to many of the characters due to how hard it is to get supports in that game and they seemed quite bland outside of Guinevere and Zephiel. RD has so much wrong with it but it was my first FE and will remain my favourite regardless. Besides, it contains the best story which is only 5 chapters long (Part 2) and is full of SO MUCH that the rest of the game isn't. That along with my favourite FE character overall which is in fact the very same as Luchi's :p .

So far, i'v only ever played The Sacred Stones, Shadow Dragon, and Awakening. I'm really liking Awakening, but I didn't really like The Sacred Stones or Shadow Dragon.

I keep hearing that there's some pretty M-rated/dark stuff going on in these games.

Does anybody mind pointing them out? I want to assume the older games like Thracia 776 probably because Japan in the 90s liked to pull weird **** like that during that time.

My experience with FE comes from the GBA release of the 8th or 9th game. To be honest, it didn't leave that much of an impression on me since it catered to people who've never played FE or SRPGs. It felt kinda toned down or something. Might play the Sacred Stones since it probably has the difficulty I'm looking for.

Actually Sacred Stones is easier than the rest of the GBA Fire Emblem, but a lot less tutorials than Blazing Sword. It can still be difficult in hard mode though, it's easiness comes from the ability to grind, similar to awakening. That’s why they are my two favorite Fire Emblems.

As for the freaky M-game stuff, first I heard of it. There’re dark for Nintendo games, but it could be MUCH worse.

I have to say I liked how after beating Sacred Stones you could play it again to get the Super Recruit, Pupil, and Journeymen. I also liked Blazing Sword, and Fire Emblem (I don't remember the subtitle but it has Lyn, Hector, and Eliwood in it).

However my first Fire Emblem was Shadow Dragon (the remade one of course).

Favorite Game is probably awakening, mostly since its got very lovely graphics and well you get to make your own Avatar (Woot Amnesia) Plus there are kids in the future and partnerships affect stat growths class options, skills, and all that good stuff (I am currently obsessed with collecting all support conversations.)

My favorite Lord of all the games I have played is probably Mar-Mar, I mean come on he is badass to the point where he has had either a main role or Cameo (At least mentioned in) FE1, FE3, FE11, FE12, and FE13! In fact if you count DLC he is playable in all of those games as well.

EDIT: (ALSO! He is in the Brawl games I know he is in two of them, so yeah, he is awesome enough for anything!)

Lastly my Absolute Favorite Class so far is probably, Manakete (I am sorry but turning into a dragon is just awesome).

@Jawnsunn - I think it's considered dark for the character death stuff. Your characters straight up die and don't come back, which is pretty mature for a game in general and they get in their depressing last words when they go down. Otherwise it's standard western fantasy via East Asia like Lodoss War.

Alright, back after a short while...

I also liked Blazing Sword, and Fire Emblem (I don't remember the subtitle but it has Lyn, Hector, and Eliwood in it).
Blaing Sword is the Jappanese Name for 'Fire Emblem', so in short, it's the same game.

As for Perma-Death, I don't think that makes the game 'dark' more of 'relalistic', but thankfully, Shin Monshō no Nazo ~Hikari to Kage no Eiyū on the DS (japan only) and Awakening has causle mode, so I think I'll cut some more slack off of that.

Well, I was playing Genealogy of the Holy War(FE4, 1996) the other day and uh...

At the beginning where the bandits were kidnapping the princess, they were kinda referencing to rape her.

I also got my ass handed because I made a few wrong moves, haha. This game pulls no punches.

Oh, we were talking about the games prior to the GBA?

Well then, that's a slightly diffrent story, espicialy with Genealogy of the Holy War and Thracia 776. Gaiden and Shadow Dragon are pretty clean (for Japan.)

Well, Shadow Dragon was one of the first titles in the series, plus it was modeled off of other RPGs like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy which had similar storylines.

Also to note lol:

I kinda like the permadeath in this series though, it encourages strategic gameplay.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
