Hey there, so i am new working with a RPGM, but i just got an idea for a game while watching anime and i wanted to ask if such a game would even have a chance to be likable if it comes from an unexperienced maker like me.

So as i mentioned, i came across the idea of making a game while watching an anime.
This anime happened to be fate:Apocrypha, so its kinda clear what my idea for the game is like: a new holy grail war containing seven parties who all try to snatch the grail away from each other. (at this point i will make many references to the fate franchise, so i hope you are at least a bit familiar with it^^)
The player takes part of a master, who summons a servant to build a team for this huge battle. You have to defeat every other servant in epic fights to grant yourself a wish from the holy grail

As mentioned, the main protagonist will be an original character and is not known from any anime or saga.
As for the servants: i plan creating new servants (using the 7 known classes) by searching for heroes in different tales, NOT using somebody who already appeared in one of the fate animes.
At this point i don't really know who to use, this will be one of the next steps after i read your criticism and/or tips for this idea, as i don't know if some game like this, which leans on an already existing franchise would get any approval whatsoever.

This world will probably be like the well-known standard RPG: kinda ancient setting with castles, magic and stuff. This is because i personally usually enjoy those kind of (RPGM) games the most AND i don't feel quite comfortable creating maps with our current time and technology.

The main thing here is: i dont use overwold maps.
I like the kind of games where you just go from map to map without travaling as an overdimensional giant across the world.
Also a big thing is: i don't like random battles, so my game will not have any of those eather. The battle will start as soon as you engage with a monster/enemy who are shown on the map as "follow player" events. The battles themselves will contain an ATB system, although i really need a huge amount of experience before i try to get the plug-in script for it and apply it into my game^^

This is my first village so far, and actually the first try of making a village ever for me, so please don't be to harsh on that ^.^
The idea is that the hero will live peacefully in a small village where everyone basically is minding their business and live their life, until something happens (i don't know if the village will be the victim of a raid or just the hero having some kind of a personal tragedy or if there is only a mysterious person who convinces him to fight in the holy grail war.

So, i am open to all kind of tips, questions and most of all: criticism!
Ande PLEASE be straight foreward if you have some (objective) criticism, as i REALLY approve it if people are completely honest with me.

Cheers, Anthrax

I'm not familiar with the fate series, but I see what you're going for. Sounds good so far, except for the characters in my opinion. I think it would be better to have OC for all relevant characters. I'm a huge fan of refrences and easter eggs, but I wouldn't add Mario as an example as an important character in a game which isn't either a fangame or parody of that franchise. Just try to make OCs for the main story.

Well the thing is: the anciant hero as a servant is kinda the whole clue in the fate series, so if i wanna make a game based on the frenchise, i don't really have a choice...
i DO plan to use heroes which had not yet appeared in any of the anime series tho, so they are kinda OCs.
also note that the anime often gender-bend some heroes to make a surprise (i won't spoiler here for obv reasons xD)

So your using characters that ARE present in either games, manga etc.

I guess this will be more of an fangame with new elements and character.
With some know characters and same lore in the same universe.

That's your first ever village? That is extremely impressive for a first go. Most people's first attempts at mapping are terrible, boxy and full of empty space. Good job on that.

Thanks a lot :)
This is indeed my first ever village, but it took me several videos for insperation and many, MANY second guessing myself because i was not sure if my work fits in (expecially with the houses, GOSH did those take long...) xD

Actually no, i'll just give an example of what i meant by "known heroes".
In fate:Zero and fate:Stay Night UBW the saber-class is represented by a hero everybody knows from tales: Arthur, King of Knights.
So what i want to do is find some heroes who were NOT yet used in the anime (for example Hector from Troja), implement them in my game and try to make it work.
I hope you understand my idea now ^.^'

I think a game with the story you want to tell is certainly possible, however I don't recommend having something quite so large as your first project. Personally I think new developers are better off starting with short stories (30 minute - 2 hours) in order to wrap there heads around the engine and how to tell an interactive narrative. All too often new developers end up biting off more than they can chew.

If your determined to tell this story you can always start by making a short game based around one of the characters or the world the game is set in, almost like a small prequel. This gives you a chance to actually finish something that's more easily achievable, to learn the engine and mechanics as well as introduce potential players to your world and characters. It will also give you the chance to get feedback that can then be used to improve your larger game project when it becomes time to start on it.

Thats some really good advice, thank you!
I think i will go with that, while still working on my "mother-project" every now and then.
But tomorrow i will start on making a short game telling the backstory of one of the characters that probably are going to be in this main game.
AND i can release it as some kind of a demo, so thanks A LOT again for that advice:owink:

Its a process that's served me well. Learned a lot releasing my own games that way, about both developing the games themselves and getting those games in-front of people.

I like the general idea of yours, but there are sooo many historical figures you can use... even actual political figures can have an influence in some way or another.
I see that you're german, so why not using something from the Nibelungsage (most people know of Siegfried von Xanten, Lorelei etc)...
Adam and Eve, Kain and Abel, Thor, Odin, Medusa, Amaterasu, Tsukiyomi... there are tons of mythological names. It doesn't have to be gods, but some stories around them are really nice... so here's what "might" help you http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/names/gods.htm
Guess you have to check out those stories yourself if you want to use them. ^^;

Anyway good luck. Will look forward to it (I love F/S as well).

wow, thank you for the great inspiration^^
i never thought of having someone from our recent past or even presence, but its actually a VERY nice idea (seeing as F/S did almost the same)
I did in fact think about using someone from the Nibelungensage, but fate:Apocrypha already used Siegfried, so maybe Hagen or someone you named would be an idea (they also used Adam as a noble phantasm, so thats out of the window unfortunatly)^^.
Anyway, i am VERY positively overwhelmed by all your feedback and support and i am extremely motivated to get this job done in a satisfying way, so please look forward to it everyone :)

If you're stuck with an arch type/zodiac/class you can PM me of course (and we don't have to write in english ^^). There are several ideas in my head right now that could fit in very well in that F/S genre.

For example the Berserker class could be Samson from the bible. Basically, he's the strongest. Fighting enemies and winning all the time, with only 1 weakness (his hair), which got discovered by his own wife (Samson told her... then she betrayed him in the same night he told her). After that, he got enslaved and his eyes poked out. When 3000 people were gathered in a building to make fun of him, he prayed for revenge and it got fulfilled (god gave him strength, he smashed the building, he and everyone died).

There really are some nice templates for rpg stories... so yea, feel free to PM me if you need more examples/advices or whatever. =)

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
