I personally never saw an Rpg game with a whole group of main characters walking on a world map.

With the exception of Dragon Quest 8, all of them had followers. Personally I'm not too bothered either way, but I nearly always add them in my games. Also wasn't a followers script all the rage back in the XP and VX days?

Personally, I liked how Star Ocean 2 did it, where you'd get to town and everyone scatters and does their own thing. You'd all be represented by one character everywhere else.
I don't know Star Ocean 2,but I know exactly what you are thinking about.I have seen this kind of feature in another RPG before (in 3D even,I believe) and it was kinda cool being able to talk with your party members and to see what they are currently thinking about.It is a lot of work though,but I certainly would like the idea to be in my RPG.Thanks for reminding me of this.

I am thinking about making it half-half: let your group follow your around in certain areas (world map/city?) and let it be one in dungeons (especially since I've thought about making simple puzzles and I generally like the idea of letting the people feel more like "Even though you have your whole party,now you have only your leader being showed",giving it a little side effect.

I know Lufia 2 but...in the dungeons you can only see the first character. :)
That's Lufia I, not II. In I they are on screen at all times.
