Forest Life is a fishing + life-sim inspired by Animal Crossing (and similar cozy games) with a nostalgic GameBoy aesthetic.
Download the game for free at https://lunacero.itch.io/forestlife

SYNOPSIS
Play as a young traveling beaver among other woodland creatures. You’re the newest resident in the town of (insert your town name) in the middle of an idyllic forest that’s perfect for fishing, gardening, and making friends! However, the townsfolk have suffered a series of earthquakes that have caused serious damages to roads and buildings. Is there anything you can do to help them?

GAMEPLAY
Forest Life’s gameplay revolves around catching and selling fish. You can use the money you’ve earned to pay for the Town Restoration Project to repair buildings and clear up roads in the forest to access more fishing spots. Earn a passive income by stocking the aquarium or growing crops. We’ve kept the game mechanics simple and relaxing. There’s around 3-4 hours of gameplay to reach the end, or you can more than double your playtime by diving into the side content.

FEATURES
  • Customize your home with over 150 pieces of unique furniture, floorings, and wall hangings. Upgrade and expand your rooms! The Trendy Home Magazine may even review and give feedback on your home!
  • Over 30 (31 to be exact) fish to catch! Upgrade your fishing rod to reel in bigger fish! Sell them to make money or donate your catch to the local aquarium. You can visit the aquarium and view your fish in its new habitat at any time.
  • The townsfolk are excited to make new friends. Help them out to receive gifts and letters. Watch their stories unfold as your friendships grow!
  • Games within a game! Carry around your PixelBoy and challenge other villagers to Pixel-Pet battles. Or set up a video game console in your home to play mini-games to pass the time.
  • A small personal garden (sorry, this isn’t a full farm-sim) can earn you a little extra money on the side.
  • There's plenty to do in town! The Auction House, the Crane Game, the hot spring, and more! But some of these spots have been damaged and you'll have to help fund the repairs to get them up and running again.
  • Find wood in the forest to craft furniture or buy what you like at the local thrift store! There’s over 70 pieces of furniture to craft! The rest can be obtained through exploration, shops, and helping villagers.
  • Explore the Forest north of town. You’ll meet characters, solve a few puzzles, explore secrets, and maybe discover the truth behind the recent earthquakes.

Looks like something straight out of a Game Boy Color, I love it. Can't wait to play it.

@fizzly Thank you!! Yess, the simplicity of the original Animal Crossing was the main inspiration.

@Former_Sky Woo! Glad to hear that. We tried to capture that GBC look. Thanks for checking it out!

No matter what they all say, but the world needs more fantasy fishing games (simulations abound...)!

I'm not a fan of anthropomorphized animals, but this was clearly made with a lot of love :wub and looks fantastic in every way. Great work so far, wish you much success with the final spurt! :thumbsup-right:

@Finnuval Ahhh!!! It's so cute, I love it!! Absolutely made my day. Thank you!! My wife did all the character art for this game and your art made her soo happy, haha

@Feuergeist Agreed! We need more fishing sims, especially ones that embrace fantasy settings. Thanks for the kind words!

Update: Pushed the release back a bit. The game's done but I'd like to polish it up some more and add a little more content. My current issue is that me and my spouse are the only playtesters haha... So if you're interested in playtesting Forest Life, feel free to send me a PM! Other than that, I've had a horribly eventful summer, but I'm excited to get this small project done. I'm shooting for the end of July / beginning of August.

The game's has about 3 hours of content to reach the end credits. My wife played through it as a completionist and it took her over 10+ hours. Much of the game's content is optional. The core-gameplay involves catching and selling fish to open up roads in the forest that will lead to the game's ending.

Here are a few screenshots and features I've been working on:

ForestLife_5.png
Lunette will rate and review your home; she will give you a score based on your interior design. Matching furniture sets and rare items will earn you extra points. Earn enough points and you'll receive rare furniture to display in your home!

ForestLife_6.png
You can acquire furniture through crafting and exploring OR you can go to Rolando's Second-Hand Emporium and pick up some used "treasure". I made a few mini-games that can be played on the PC or game console. Taking inspo from Animal Crossing's (GC) NES games.

I've also made an Instruction Manual and a Walkthrough. Here's a preview of the manual:

My wife's working on an mini art book for the game. Here's a small preview:

Oliver and Lunette! Siblings that have a couple side-quests for the player, so be sure to swing by their house.

That's all for now! Thanks for checking it out!

Update: Made in itch page!
https://lunacero.itch.io/forestlife

Some things I've been working on:
  • Added a "Task Board" for the player to fulfill villager requests (fish delivery).
  • Each task will increase the player's friendship and unlock a small cutscene with the character.
  • Added more furniture (rewards for helping villagers)
  • I got a word count of the game's dialogue: 70k words (Basically a novel) but I estimate at least 90% of that dialogue is optional. Similar to Animal Crossing, certain conversations will vary depending on random variables. Helping villagers will open up new conversations.
That's all for now! Here are a few screenshots of what I'm working on.

The artwork in this game is soooooooooooo cute! Also, I love the writing / dialogue that I've seen so far.

Don’t forget to catch Advent Day #3 compiled right here! Hmm. Let’s make today’s question…what is your favorite dish served at your holiday dinner?
All of the male sprites in New Dawn for the are built off of the third sprite I ever made on top of the first sprite base I made nearly a year ago, and now I'm making the female sprite base, and just by virtue of the amount of elapsed time and the number of sprites I've made since then, I think I'm going to have to revise all of my male sprites at some point.
I am going to be known on this forum for three things: RMXP, no combat, and bakeries.

In other news, I've just discovered that I misread the Jam deadline. It's the 21st, not the 24th! I guess I'd better hurry it up XD
