Now this isn't a rant or anything hate related, it's just a personal observation.
For the past few years, I've noticed a significant decline in forum activities on the internet. Former thriving forums with thousands of active users are now ghost towns. Many forums shut down from inactivity. Less people seem to care in contributing to public information for special interest forums.
Now to be more RPG Maker related, I remember back in the days when RPG VX was the engine to use, VX forums were always active and people were always creating new, innovative scripts. Nowadays, the former active VX forums are dead for the most parts. VX Ace has been out for a while, but I feel like there isn't that many diverse scripts or games like how VX had in the same amount of years. I used to be able to find really useful and interesting scripts in VX, but it feels like I'm looking for a Rosalina amiibo when it comes to finding what I needed in Ace. There probably is a significant increase with commercial RPG Maker games, but it feels like community-made games or scripts are just not as abundant as they used to be. In order to find the scripts that I need, I'd have to resort to Japanese or Portuguese scripts.
I mean, I feel like there are many factors involved with the decline in forums, not just RPG Maker forums and they are:
- Forums were a fad that got replaced
- The generation that was really involved with forums has moved onto other things in life
- Bad global economy, which could lead to people prioritizing trivial things less
- People want faster discussions or simpler things to read like on Reddit or Facebook
- Talking to strangers online isn't as popular anymore
- People got busier
- People rather watch videos on Youtube for their special interests
I feel that most people would believe that Reddit and Facebook are the primary factors for the decline of online forums like how Bboy.org closed their forums and replaced it with a Facebook group, but RPG Maker communities aren't the case; Reddit and Facebook have little to no activity with RPG Maker. The forums for RPG Maker have also significantly declined in activity over the years, but they don't seem the people don't seem have left to a different medium. The interest in RPG Maker probably has declined significantly with the factors that I mentioned. Personally, I hate looking for information or trying to learn something on Reddit or Facebook because they aren't designed to be as organized as forums posts.
These are my personal thoughts, so what do you guys think?
