Here's me with yet another eventing question. I'd like to have a sound effect play at about the same time as a text box appears. In this case, it's a surprised yelp as if one character had elbowed the other in the ribs.

So what do I do, after acquiring the sound file of course? Place the "play SE" before or after the text?

Um I don't think it matters, because unless you use the wait command, text boxes(as well as pictures) instantly show up, so nomatter if you put the SE in before or after, as far as the player is concerned, they are happening at the same time.

I'd do it before. Like Zoltar said, the speed at which the program processes commands is such that they'll seem instantaneous, but just that nanosecond can help sell the illusion the box is caused by the sound, not the other way around.

If you put it before the Show Message, the sound effect can play while the text box opens.


If you play it after the Show Message, then it will play only after the message ends (which is commonly done via player pressing a button to end it).


It depends on how you need it to act. This is something you could test out to see which you prefer.

Thanks, everyone. I did something foolish and saved the changes to that event, but I'll experiment just like you suggested. Guess this thread can now be closed.

Actually in this case, it matters... Events don't process the next commands after Show Text / Show Choices until the text/choice box is closed...

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
