Game activation script?

Hi there,

I would like to know if there is a script or something that when a player plays the game the first time, that they have to enter an activation code/serial number, and then after they have entered it, they don't have to enter it again.

if you mean like those used by other softwares where you need to buy them to get an activation code so that you can use the program, those are called DRM... and you would need to find a provider for that... they come for a cost though...


now if it's just like some game gimick, then it's a different matter...

You may think there is no point, but what if they had to enter a code which was on the game website, so before they play they put the code in the first time. The same code for everybody. The page would be member locked so people have to sign up (basically forcing them to sign up before they play as they are playing the game)

Maybe, I was just wondering, I wasn't going to do it definite, it depends on what happens really.

It should be possible by events to implement passworts - just use a dummy actor , call up the rename function and then compare the new name with a preset password in conditional branches. There is a blogpost with a tutorial how to do that, just search for password in the blog of this site (linked top right)


However, that alone would require the password every time a new game is started. You'll need a script to store persistent data to have the game remember that input instead of requiring it each new game.


For Ace, there is such a script by Fomar in one of the ReStaff archives - but that won't work on XP.


You'll have to look yourself for a persistent data script for RMXP, I don't know that version...

You would also have to devise a way for the game to check the website to see if the code entered in the game is the same as the code on the website. Otherwise, you'd never be able to change the code on the website, because the game would have the value hardcoded.

I just thought I'd mention here that if one person gets the code, people will pirate it. There is barely any point to having something with only one code, I'm afraid.

If you wanted the code to be public on the website, then what's the point?

I believe the intention is not to protect the game with DRM, but to encourage people to visit the forum to get the code. If it only requires signup on the forum to see the code, there's really not much point in sharing it with others because you're just making them get it one way for free instead of another way for free.


If it IS DRM you are wanting (making sure people pay before they play the game), then you'd need a DRM solution, and not do it within the game.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:

Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
