I found out about this event just last week but I couldn’t resist so I put a hold on my main project for this. It’s been a LOT of hard work, but I’m happy with the results. :)

    Game information:

    Story:

Your home planet is at war and things are not going well. You’re an amazing engineer, but a shortage of fighter pilots is forcing you out into the battlefield. And all they can give you is a scout ship - the SS Ventus.

You: “A scout ship?! Not even a proper fighter?!”

Commander: “Yeah... well, we’ve upgraded it. It now has basic weapons and shields.”

You: “You say that like it’s a good thing!”

Commander: “Oh, come on, you’re an engineer. You can make upgrades.”

    You: “With what material?!”

    Commander: “Good luck! Command out...”

    You: “...?!”

    You: “...”

    You: “Hmmm… upgrades...”

    Gameplay / Features:

Instead of just blowing up enemy ships, you fly around and disable them. Then you can board the enemy ship which has a procedurally generated interior. Defeating enemies within the other ships gives you weapon components you can use to upgrade your weapons. You can choose one of 4 weapons from the locker on the SS Ventus. On the enemy ships, you’ll also find ship components you can use to upgrade your ship. You can return to your ship at any time through the menu. When you’ve upgraded at least one of your weapons and fully upgraded the ship, you’ll gain access to the final enemy warship.

Estimated play time: About 30 minutes

    Game Guide:

Here are a few tips to keep in mind while playing the game:

    • Standard controls: "Esc" or "x" to open the menu or cancel. "Enter" or "z" to confirm or interact with stuff.

    • You can use the mouse too: Left click for confirm / interact with stuff. Right click to cancel / access menu. NOTE: On the name input screen, you have to click on the letters two times...

    • When you're in space or on an enemy ship, you can get back to your ship by opening the menu and selecting "Return to Ship" or "Enter Ship". NOTE: If you leave an enemy ship, it will disappear. You'll need to disable another ship to explore.

    1. Save Point. (It's always wise to save often)

    2. Pilot controls. This control panel brings you to the space view where you can fight other ships

    3. Ship Upgrades. From here you can restore your ship’s hit points at no cost. (Best to do this after every battle with another ship.) From here you can also upgrade your ship’s weapons and shields. There are 4 enemy ship difficulties: [IMG]
The small warship is beatable from the beginning, but medium probably won’t be. As you upgrade, you’ll be able to beat medium and large and eventually the command ship.

    4. Transporter. After disabling a ship, you can transport over to it from here.

    5. Heal point. If you rest in the bed, your hit points will be completely restored. It's recommended to do this after fighting the aliens on board enemy ships.

    6. Weapons upgrade. From here you can use weapon components to upgrade your weapons. There are also 4 difficulties for the aliens: [IMG]
Level 1 weapon can beat level 1 alien, but probably not level 2. Level 5 weapon will take out level 1 alien with one hit.

Weapons Locker. Here you can choose which weapon to use when fighting the aliens.

    My Game Jam Experience:

I've been working on a project for the past several months and I kept thinking that it would be awesome to make a small game to post on the forums so I can at least start getting my name out there. But I didn't want to derail my main project and spend too much time on the smaller one. Then I saw this event and it fit perfectly! Challenges like this motivate me and provide accountability. It couldn't derail my main project because there was a solid deadline. (And a short one at that!)

Part of my main project involves space travel and I recently finished mapping the interior of a ship to explore. I had so much fun making it, so I thought it would be great to have this little game be about exploring derelict ships in space. I found a great plugin that creates random dungeons during gameplay. I was trying to think of a way to make it more exciting though, so instead of derelict ships, they were full of aliens you have to fight. It made sense to me that you'd have to disable the ship, then you could board it and fight the aliens. To give the player a goal, I decided to add components to upgrade your weapons and your ship.

The first parts of development actually came together extremely quickly. Within a few days I had a playable game. The eventing took a bit to figure out, but not too bad. After that, I started running into the more challenging parts which for me was the artwork and game balance. I created the ship sprites from scratch and it took FOREVER. Creating artwork for games is amazingly difficult and I greatly admire those who do it regularly. I think they turned out half-way decent, but then I had to make battlers for the enemy ships. Due to lack of time and artistic ability, I just took the sprites, enlarged them, and skewed them for perspective. Yep, it looks as bad as it sounds. :)

Balancing the game was also very difficult for me. That whole part of games has always been a bit confusing to me. Trying to balance the weapons and enemies and component drops took a long time and a lot of play testing. I still don't think the balance turned out very well, but I had to go with "good enough".

All in all this has been a great experience! I have a completed little game that I'm happy with. There is a lot of room for improvement and some time in the future I may revisit this project and make it great. Until then, I hope you all enjoy this little game!
