Updated version of the menu I've been working on for the past few weeks.

Excuse the black bars, I haven't figured out what I'm doing about the resolution yet.

@Yoraee - Love the concept! Sounds like a really unique concept, I'm interested to see how it would work in battle. Love the artstyle, too.

@Kaelan - Very smooth animations, I like. I think there's too much empty space between the actor info and menu icons, though.

Rough cut of my teaser trailer. (It's actually unlisted on YouTube itself, just fyi) Lemme know what y'all think, hopefully the "wake up" comes through clearly.
I'm actually shooting a live-action "commercial" tomorrow, too!

Hello everybody,

this is my first map of a game about Kafkas novel "the trial"... at the beginning the protagonist awakes and gets arrested (he doesn't know why and he can live like normal without having to go to prison).. the atmosphere is pretty dark, but I didnt want to make it too dark (the beginning should be pretty realistic, before things get a little bit more surreal)..

I used a sepia filter in gimp to achieve this style (the game plays in the beginning of 19th century).. I also devided the rooms by showing black pictures.. you can collect parts of the novel that you are playing.. so in this map you can climb up the row and walk on the walls.. I also used animations with the doodads-plugin for the lighting by the window in the second room..
What do you think? Thanks you for your feedback :)

@breakout That looks awesome! The idea of darkening a room that you're not in is actually a really good one, I like it! If you do plan to do more lighting and shadows, just some advice as I see a little bit of it in there already...don't be afraid to make the shadows a little darker and harder if it looks more realistic. I think some really good overlay lighting and shadows would make the sepia tone pop even more.

@Kato-A This looks really good! I have nothing to complain about it, I guess :) I am thinking about using different color styles too, but not quite sure, if it would be too inconsistent.. in your case it's part of the story, right? so the different colors per map seem to fit to the game you want to make!

@thephoenix112 Thank you for your feedback! May I ask what you mean with "good overlay lighting"? I only used one layer, where I made the shadow black and left the light parts empty/ transparent.. I used a lot of gaussian blur too, as you see, because I am not good in drawing exact shadows.. Would it be a good idea to add an additional "light layer" with some white/yellow tone to highlight the light parts? (I am still a beginner in parallax, so thanks for any advice :))

Either an additional light layer or blend it in. If you have a few dollars to spend on it, there's a number of helpful people in the commissions section (you'll need 30 posts to see it) that do incredible work for very reasonable prices, and that extra shading just makes games look 100x better. That plus your sepia tone and a few other things would look incredible together.

For my retro one-map challenge I am using a couple of tiles from the Time Fantasy pack, but I need different colour schemes. Now, nobody could ever accuse me of being an artist, and I'm worried that my attempts might make people's eyes bleed.

Please take a look at the 4 maps below, and tell me if you could play a game with these colours, without cringing, or is it time for me to seek help?

The top left is the original. The other three are my feeble attempts. I think the original is way more subdued and easier to look at.

Please @ tag me if you respond, so I get notified straight away.
