@csevans84 because there are sides to all sides (hope that makes sense) it looks like it's a bit bowl-shaped. Outside of that it looks good

Nope that make sense. This is step one. It took 120 layers to get that finished and I still have beaches and coves and over contents to go lol.

@csevans84 the tower in the middle looks a bit off because it's so isolated. (adding some shadow perhaps could make it a bit more unified). And , but this is me nit-picking, the town seems rather large in comparison to the map, but it's the only feature yet so can't really tell

I had had issues with the size. I am going with the same style that Chrono Trigger used where there are no town only spots on the map to walk too. So everything needs to be larger.

@csevans84 Okay, well then it'll be good. I would however add some shading or street-tile in the center to make it more of a whole, like I said it looks just a tad bit off (to me anyway and I'm no expert lol)

@Paladin-Cleric of Awesome like the feel of both of them though some of the water parts a a bit square (then again that's rpgmaker for you haha) maybe add a little green on the edges? Just a thought, mine actually and you already know I like clutter LOL

Revised (and hopefully last :D) version of my town
I feel like the bridge is a bit out of place since the stream is so tiny. Also it feels like a weird place to build a bridge when there's really nothing to go to, no path or anything.
Maybe have some walkable rocks, or make a gap in the water or something instead?

Hi everyone! So, I've tried tocreate a dialogue system which uses RTP character sprites instead of face graphics, as I find them much easier/quicker to edit and create unique designs with. My challenge with this is presenting these sprites in a way which conveys emotions, and engages the player in the conversations. Uploading my results so far, hope y'all like them.

I think the pink behind Minuet is a bit too much - it makes her look like parts of her are blending into the background. Also, the names are a bit hard to read due to both being a different direction and different colours. I'd highly recommend picking a nice neutral colour for behind both of them and for their names, as well as find a way to have both names face the same direction at least so they're easier to read. The sprites are nice, though, as is the idea of posed sprites for faces.

I do wonder if, instead of having the sprites as faces you couldn't just animate the sprites on the screen instead. Maybe use a zoom script of some kind so that you can zoom in on them as they do their interactions? It'd feel a lot better as the focus would be on the actual characters and not the sides of the screen.

So I was wondering how painstaking and awful it would be to draw a map by hand and then use that in a game.
I did this just to see how it would work and how complicated it would be.

Here's what I learned:
  • I rendered a 48x48 grid in gimp and printed it...pixel measurements don't translate well into print
  • In order for this to actually work, you have to go in and erase everything around whatever you want to have in your above layer.
  • Actually drawing maps, for real, would be the worst thing you could ever do.
  • This might work if you drew all the resources separately like how they are actually done, and then made them into parallax sheets and did it that way.

MODS:
This isn't anything I'm working on. I just wanted to do it to see how the experience was and figured since I was done with it I'd share it here because I like these threads and I thought maybe someone else would see it and go, "Oh, cool." Maybe it'll inspire someone who can draw to do something like this. Plus, I like these threads. I honestly don't think this is too off topic or disruptive for this thread (since this isn't actually a work in progress).

Imagine actually doing this and hand drawing all the sprites, all the doors and chests. Hand drawing the animated tiles. No thanks.

I AM NOT AN ARTIST.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
time for a new avatar :)
