@Legend:

The tiles in this picture aren't lined up normally, is that intended? I'm talking about the ones the sprites are on, most notably next to the slimes.

That character in the battle scene has to be the most over-used character portrait in rpg maker history.

Wide open spaces make your maps look boring and are by most people considered as bad mapping. Just saying.
I disagree. I think cluttered maps tend to be the boring ones. I mean, obviously if its just some walls and ground tiles, then yeah that's boring, but if it's set up like a proper area, maybe some decorations, then it can be quite effective, makes the player feel very small in their world, and you can juxtapose that with tighter, cluttered and more restrictive maps to drive in a powerful sense of claustrophobia and stress on players.

Or you could just fill it up with as much as possible for the fun of visual noise. If you've got tonnes and tonnes of custom tiles to stop reptition, then I suppose that's a far more justifiable thing to do, though.

The game is about a character that's colourblind. Colour is used to signify characters/monsters from another dimension.

If anything, you could've just simply made the tiles in grayscale instead of doing what you did. What you currently have

is grating to the eyes and completely turns me off from playing the game.

Well, that's fine. Then it isn't for you. But people on other sites have expressed interest in the look specifically. I only came up with it when I got really pissed off at people whining and complainging about me using the default RTP tilesets in my main project. I tried to explain that I very much can't into pixel stuff at all, but no one ever listens to that, especially people that are really good at it. I think it's really funny, because they're like "nah, just do this n that and read this tutorial on deviant art and youll be an expert in 5 easy steps." Im beginning to rant. I only meant to type a sentence.

If it explains anything, I listen to/produce a low of HNW and Noise music, and the game features a lot of that. Nowhere near as subtle/ambient is my horror project though which focuses on sine waves and down tempo. Im going on a tangent again goddamnit I need some blues to stop this madness!

Apple pie.

West Maine, people who are color blind don't see in black and white. They sometimes mistakes colors for other colors, and what you have there is painful to look at.

Ignore those who hate on the RTP. When used correctly it can look amazing. The issue with the black/white is that it's far too harsh on the eyes. I can't imagine how playing the game would feel when the screenshots themselves hurt the eyes so much. Try what was suggested - a grey-scale option. It would be very easy to implement, what with it being a feature of most decent image editing programs. It would probably look a lot more effective, too.

Something like this only took me literal seconds to do.

Yes, and magic isn't real and people typically dont make money by killing giant spiders. Lets not focus on what happens in real life, shall we? :p

And I dont care if its painful to look at for you or some other people. its fine for me, quite soothing, and some other people have liked it too, which is enough for me. If I wanted it to be all ooh pretty and glazy and look like every other rpgmaker game right now I could just add a bunch of lighting effects and download some other peoples resources theyve put out. But im FAR too lazy to do all of that.

That would be fine and all, but making it just desaturated [which I originally considered] just makes it look like the default RTP but grey. It's so similar to the original tileset that I'd might as well be using it. Know what I mean?

But... you're limiting your player base by making it something people can't play without having to go to the optometrist afterwards. You should at least try to make an effort to cut losses and listen if people say something that's common sense. You could do a greyscale of the mack tiles and use them instead if you really don't like the RTP, or attempt to make your own.

It's your choice, but why show off your screens here if you don't want people to give you advice on how to make them better?

But if, what, around 13 people are really going to enjoy the game, and appreciate the aesthetic, why should I compromise their enjoyment to satisfy an imaginary greater demographic that by all chances won't even play it? I have my other two games for that, haha.

or attempt to make your own.
Agh man, I liked you until this point ;[ I'm too tired to go quote the bit where I said I cannooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot [not for lack of trying dozens of billions of times, and thats only a slight exaggeration :p ].

I already explained why I really don't like to just use desaturated tiles. Look, comparison:

Overlaid Desatured with how it was.

See how the Desatured tiles just look drab, boring and frankly emptier. They just look like they're missing colour, theyre just gonna make people wish it was in colour, and since its the default rtp, they already know what that looks like. So, again, limiting playerbase.

I thought the thread was about mapping. But if making it better equates to making it in line with a majority of other people's aesthetics as opposed to my own, then it kinda defeats the entire purpose. But like I said, that approach doesn't really work out either, because its still just the default RTP!  :guffaw:   :guffaw:   :guffaw:

Oh man am I tired. It's half 6 am!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
