So, having listened to the feedback here I've tried to ground my characters more into the background, and added shadows. Hopefully this looks a tad better.

Also behold my new area introduction bar!

RMMV
@Mirpono, it's looking good. One that I saw that needed to be corrected was the fence by the large house. The bottom row, two posts to the left doesn't fit properly.

Everybody please say hello to....MY WORLD MAP!

Jokes aside...I have no idea how to make a World Map.  And I know my game needs one.  I've looked at others for inspiration or how they made theirs but I have no idea how I want mine to look :( .  I also have no idea what I'm going to do about the cutscene in the house.  I found one picture that depicts a fantasy type war but couldn't figure out how to fade in the text and picture seamlessly without it looking choppy or broken.  I guess I'll work on database stuff today :(

Worry about the world map once your lore is complete. One good way if you really want to start right away, is to make it bit by bit. Just make the area that's relevant first, and fill it out as you go along.

As for the intro - it all depends on what kind of style you're looking for.

You could for instance fade the picture in first, over a blank map, and then fade the writing in afterwards.

To fade pictures in a good way, use the show picture function, and show with low opacity(20-50), then wait 10 frames, then show the picture again, in the same slot, with a slightly higher opacity(40-100), and repeat til you reach 255.

It's a pain, but it looks nice.

Just tinker. If you have something special in mind, and need help, you can hit me up on PM.

Edit:

Celianna, sorry for responding to chatter. Didn't see your post there. I'll make up for it with a proper screen tomorrow :p

Okay, totally serious this time >.>

In the game, this is your friend's house.  He lives alone with himself and his little brother.  Something quick put together with Mack's set.  I'm really considering redoing the other maps in Mack's set as well but feel there aren't enough tiles to really do a full game.  Are there any other tilesets that compliment Mack's and would make for a "full" set to make an entire game?

Note: I don't own VX so I can't use Celianna's.  Otherwise, those would be perfect.

@Quigon: The menu looks good.  From the options there, is it a survival game?

EDIT: Went and redid one map in all Mack's.  I gotta' say I like it a whole lot better!  The art style is just...neater I think.  But I'm still wondering if you can make a whole game using his set.  I don't think so, so if anyone can point me in the right direction that'd be nice.  And I apologize if that's chatter Celianna.  Figured I'd ask here than beg in a different thread.  And I figured it goes along with my screenshot.

New Lor Forest Mapshot

New Lor Forest Play Test SS

I couldn't find lily pads, so I left those out lol.

Gonna work on the whole town of Lor now.  I'll edit this in a bit.

WNxTyr4el : The best one is the one that suits you.

As an independant game maker, you are (often) also your own Art Director.

If it works for you, go on ! :)

Behold my worldmap xD... okay.

===

@WNxTyr4el: The map looks very nice, but there's something that bugs me =D. You know, nice tileset, and nice effects, but that tree wall at the upper part of the map is too... straight. Everything else looks so natural, and that is... too straight. Just a little, very very very little of variation there could make it much nicer.

@Quigon: That menu looks awesome. It's a great job, nothing else to say ='D...

@hian: The upper bar blends pretty nice with the awesome trail <3. Also I like how the character's positions help hiding the grid. Very nice done screen <3<3.

I want to put my WHOLE worldmap, it's a 10240x4032 image (full-res whole 320x126 map) so be warned xD.

So here it goes as a link (1.46Mb): http://puu.sh/4A0IC.png

And here is in-game, with some effects (?). Yeh, 640x480 pics, much better.

Hope is the last thing you lose (?),

@muramasa that map looks awesome!  I love it!  Also, fun fact.  As soon as you posted that, I couldn't get into the forums, lol.  You broke them!  Great job!  I'm not a fan of the retro graphics that XP uses but it looks great!

And as promised, here is my town of Lor with and without effects

Entire Mapshot

With Effects

And yes...there are two Tobi's lol.  I have one following me to test my cinematic in the house up top there.  I don't know why but I think the effects look a lot better and make the map look a lot better when using Mack's tileset.

@muramasa : A train line ? That's interesting.

I suppose there is a reason for it to exist and only in this particular place.

But I cannot see why the stations are so far from the town. Actually, they look like they are far from anything civilized.

Also, for your towns/settlements, it would be more logical for the settlers to build near a river or on the coast. Maybe the rivers do not appear on the map, though, as I cannot see any.

@WNxTyr4el : This is really nice ! Maybe I have to see the effect 'live' but I kind of prefer the first pic without it. It looks a little washed out.

@Muramasa Damn man, you're really good at spriting~ (those battlers!) ( ^ u ^ )=b

@WNxTyr4el

2 things.  First the Mack tile sets - yes you can make a game that is mostly Mack tiles.  If you are careful about which ones you use, it is possible to use some RTP ones with them.  But as I say, you have to be careful. One of the main things to watch out for is that Mack tiles assume bigger sprites than Ace has.  What I have done is to use GIMP and reduce some of them - the kitchen sink, for example, otherwise they are out of proportion.  It's that difference in size which is one of the main reasons why it can be difficult to use them with the standard Ace tiles.

here is a link for a lot of Mack tile sets http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/7974-mack-seasons-tileset/  These are the ones edited for the seasons.  For the original set go here http://www.tekepon.net/fsm/modules/refmap/index.php?mode=vx-map  Between them, these have virtually all of them.

Second, I had the same reaction to your screenie of the room above as I had when I saw your room in the video intro - there is simply too much empty, dead space.  I'd make those maps much more compact.

@ksjp: Thanks for the feedback.  I'll fix that up when I can lol.  I can't figure out which water tile to use though.  I think I have the full set, but those seasons ones are nice, thanks for that.

Is this the right water?  I have all the A tiles and this should be A1 or A2 but I can't seem to get it right.

EDIT: Fixed the houses.  Made 'em smaller as requested.

Mack doesn't have the more 'cheerful' blue colour of the Ace tiles.  so yes, that's a water tile.  There are 2 basic ones - the first one (literally the first tile) is the 'cliff' one, and tile 5 is the one you have used.  A limitation of the Mack water tiles is that you can't combine them into one water feature the way you can with Ace.  You have to use one or the other.

On the second row of the A1 tiles tiles one and three are also water tiles, but those are for a non-grass terrain.

EDIT

Another thing about that second room - you walk into the house and you walk straight into the bedroom, whereas the kitchen is at the back.  People would be much more likely to have the bedroom away from the front door.  If I have a couple of minutes, I'll do a quick example of what I mean and post it here.

EDIT AGAIN

Here it is.  I have used the same tiles as you did, but have added a couple more cupboards.  If this were my room, I would put a bit of plain carpet in front of the fire and a couple of chairs, because that's where people would sit.

@Cadh: I like the first and second ones, but the third one confuses me.  It looks like there's a level on top of the roof?  But it doesn't look right.  Also, the second one, fill it in a little more.  It looks like quite a nice maze/dungeon but, fill in some spots more with stuff.

I'll try, but it is supposed to be an old house whose owner died 5 yrs before and was subsequently mostly emptied out so I don't want it too cluttered. In addition to finding your way around you need to get certain objects to the correct spots to activate certain scenes/effects.

The third one is supposed to be out on the porch and that is the porch roof extending out that you are seeing. The porch is exclusively used for a scene, not for gameplay.

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
