@Dark_Metamorphosis:Decent starts, but here are some areas of opportunity

  • For the Cavern maps, they are all very empty.  I'd recommend putting some more nature items around, as well as slim the rooms down a little:  tiny sprites mean tiny rooms.  Be sure you are using colors that complements the area.
  • For the Ice/Lava cavern maps, the colors seem a little off.  Try messing around with the wall/ground/lava combination.
  • I see you are using some light scripting...it doesn't look too bad but a lot of your areas are very dark.  Subtle lighting will go a long way, unless the darkness is part of a game mechanic...if it is, I recommend a light around the player.
Good luck!
Thanks for the feedback! Yes the cavern maps are a WIP and that's why they lack detail (I have just made the foundation so far). I posted it to illustrate how I work with the more 'randomized' walls to try and make the walls look a bit more natural. Do you think the rooms are too big? Is that what you mean with slim them down? Will see if I might recolor the wall of the lava cave as well, I do agree that it can feel a little off but I can always change it later on.

I'm trying to implement my own glows and light effects, so all of those are made with photoshop and by using an overlay script. It doesn't feel too dark while playing (in my opinion), but I do agree that a light source around the player would be vital. I'm not sure how I can implement that though and Khas light script that I used before is giving me a lot of trouble with the tints and farmedrops so I decided to remove it.

@Dark_Metamorphasis: Those look like a good start! Obviously the first one needs a lot more detail, and I'm wondering about the ladder that goes up from the island, is it going to a higher level or to the next island? The lava cave looks pretty good, great use of double space with the two levels.
The ladder is going to the upper level (not the next island). I do think that it looks a bit weird, but I'm not sure how I will make it more clear that It's a ladder that goes to the upper level. I thought about shadows but It looks even more weird and I can't make it look right. Thanks! I had a lot of struggle before I managed to work out the 'double spaces' and make the boarded walls 3 tiles high while the second level platforms needed to be 2 tiles high. It was pretty complicated to merge them in a good way.

@metamorphis looks like the complexity and detail in some of them is different, for instance the first map is kind of plain very square not overly detailed, then the ingame screen has a lot of variation and detail.  You did a great job on the detailed ones I think you should revisit first add some flavor!
I do have a bit of trouble with the 'flooded' areas, they tend to look a bit stiff and boring and I'm not sure how I can spice them up (since there is so much water). The dungeon in question will have a game mechanic where the player needs to fill and empty these flooded rooms, so the same room as seen in the screenshot also appear without the water (and is much more detailed when Its drained).

@metamorphis I think the screens show how much you are coming along, I agree with stepping back and maybe revisiting some of the other maps to really fill them in.
I'll make sure to fill them in and give them much more detail. I might post another session when they are pretty much done. I posted the flooded cave once mainly to show the 'randomized' walls and see if people think it looks more natural, or plain weird :p

Thanks a lot for the feedback you guys.

curved walls depend on the tiles you use, celiannas are square, hanzo's are round.

Oh, also quick question: Are curved walls an Ace thing? Because i can't really do those in VX...
As well as parallaxing, there are tilesets with curved walls.  How they go about it differs.  Mack has an autotile one; Hanzo has a few, which are really either XP edits or else are really Benben's.  I'm not sure what else is available for VX, but with some hunting around you should find something.

Looks great! Very natural. Only things that stick out to me are the mushrooms growing on the log to the left, and the tree that's right on the edge of the rocks.

Nice shadow, what tiles are you using? They look great. Map looks wonderful too, though those mushrooms stick out like a sore thumb. Plus those trees on the rock are not very natural at all. At least they don't look it.

Lihinel, love that map. Are you doing the lighting with an overlay?

@lihinel, i like the map...only thing that kinda bothers me is the brushes you painted with, id erase with a squiggly brush some so it looks less shall we say consistent.  This may also just be my preference.

@blood he is using hanzo's tiles, that is what i use

@shadow ahh nice im still deciding when i get to forest what tree's to use with hanzo's for my game.

Thanks for the comments everyone! And yes, all of the graphics is the XP RTP exept the purple flowers, the water and the waterfall. I only use the RTP resources for most of my

mapping.

@Bloodmorphed: Thanks and yes I am using Yami's Overlay Mapping Script.

@Stridah: I kinda get what you mean, but I used a simple process to generate the overlay, I tried like 10 different ways and this was the one that produced the best results. (Yes I am kinda saying its not a bug, its a feature. lol. I am just not much of an artist, thats why I tried to come up with an alogrithm instead of relying on my artistic sense.)

XP tiles are so awesome... I like their waterfalls... they look much more real and blends well with the water, unlike the VX and Ace waterfalls

Been playing around with making maps. I don't really do much else with RPG Maker as of yet. I just randomly make maps for fun. I have no actual game I make these for.

Thoughts?

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
