Thanks for the feedback! Yes the cavern maps are a WIP and that's why they lack detail (I have just made the foundation so far). I posted it to illustrate how I work with the more 'randomized' walls to try and make the walls look a bit more natural. Do you think the rooms are too big? Is that what you mean with slim them down? Will see if I might recolor the wall of the lava cave as well, I do agree that it can feel a little off but I can always change it later on.@Dark_Metamorphosisecent starts, but here are some areas of opportunity
Good luck!
- For the Cavern maps, they are all very empty. I'd recommend putting some more nature items around, as well as slim the rooms down a little: tiny sprites mean tiny rooms. Be sure you are using colors that complements the area.
- For the Ice/Lava cavern maps, the colors seem a little off. Try messing around with the wall/ground/lava combination.
- I see you are using some light scripting...it doesn't look too bad but a lot of your areas are very dark. Subtle lighting will go a long way, unless the darkness is part of a game mechanic...if it is, I recommend a light around the player.
I'm trying to implement my own glows and light effects, so all of those are made with photoshop and by using an overlay script. It doesn't feel too dark while playing (in my opinion), but I do agree that a light source around the player would be vital. I'm not sure how I can implement that though and Khas light script that I used before is giving me a lot of trouble with the tints and farmedrops so I decided to remove it.
The ladder is going to the upper level (not the next island). I do think that it looks a bit weird, but I'm not sure how I will make it more clear that It's a ladder that goes to the upper level. I thought about shadows but It looks even more weird and I can't make it look right. Thanks! I had a lot of struggle before I managed to work out the 'double spaces' and make the boarded walls 3 tiles high while the second level platforms needed to be 2 tiles high. It was pretty complicated to merge them in a good way.@Dark_Metamorphasis: Those look like a good start! Obviously the first one needs a lot more detail, and I'm wondering about the ladder that goes up from the island, is it going to a higher level or to the next island? The lava cave looks pretty good, great use of double space with the two levels.
I do have a bit of trouble with the 'flooded' areas, they tend to look a bit stiff and boring and I'm not sure how I can spice them up (since there is so much water). The dungeon in question will have a game mechanic where the player needs to fill and empty these flooded rooms, so the same room as seen in the screenshot also appear without the water (and is much more detailed when Its drained).@metamorphis looks like the complexity and detail in some of them is different, for instance the first map is kind of plain very square not overly detailed, then the ingame screen has a lot of variation and detail. You did a great job on the detailed ones I think you should revisit first add some flavor!
I'll make sure to fill them in and give them much more detail. I might post another session when they are pretty much done. I posted the flooded cave once mainly to show the 'randomized' walls and see if people think it looks more natural, or plain weird@metamorphis I think the screens show how much you are coming along, I agree with stepping back and maybe revisiting some of the other maps to really fill them in.
Thanks a lot for the feedback you guys.
