I don't think screenshots were showing what's actually going on in combat very well, so I finally got around to doing this. Took me a bit longer than expected, but here it is. There's still a few minor display bugs I need to fix, and I just noticed I forgot to set passability on the tiles properly again, but all that (hopefully) shouldn't get in the way of seeing what's going on overall. Still a WIP, warranty void if seal broken, standard disclaimers apply, etc:

Don't mind Ralph, he's there to trigger the combat sequence; It's supposed to start when enemies see you, but I haven't implemented the enemy line of sight stuff yet :<
This is so awesome! If I didn't know anything about RM except for the name, I would never thought it WOULD be made in the engine. That combat is also great! I like it! Teehee! ^^

@andy it looks like solid mapping but really it is so dark i can not tell what is really there.
All my testplayers said, ingame they could see enaugh. ;)

The Darkness in some Parts of the game is essential for the gameplay.

And ... burried by 50 Miles of Water and Ice ... the is not so much light ;)

@Andynator If you want us to provide feedback on your map, we need to be able to see what's there. Maybe post the image without the overlay.

Why do you think, i wan't feedback on the mapping?

I want feedback on the appearance and visual effects. And the Lighting is part of it. Does the map feels like under Water?

If i want feedback on a map, i would post a complete mapshoot ... not a single ingame-Screen ;)

@Andynator:

I'm not a submarine life specialist but after only 10 years I think there is *a lot* of algaes/things. It looks more like a century has passed to be covered like this.

Um, maybe because this is a map screenshot thread? But yeah, the visual effects are pretty cool. It's quite a scary map. Are the HP/MP bars (on the top-left) darkened too? Because it would be nice if they were still light because you need to see them, just like the hotkeys.

And as cabfe said, there is a lot of algae. Maybe a little too much. (But you can't have too much algae, right?)

Can anyone help me do interior mapping better? I mean, I don't know, the following map just seems kind of dry. I mean, I'm not sure where to start. It just doesn't interest me. And if it doesn't interest me, then it will probably not be captivating to the player either lol. So here it is.

@andy - If you want feedback on a specific part, such as the lighting/overlay effects, then it is helpful to specify that, otherwise, we assume you want feedback on the map as a whole. Personally, I think it's way too dark, but those who've seen me post here know I don't like dark screens, so take my opinion for what it's worth. I have a feeling based on your previous comments that you feel it's just fine. Also, the bars at the top - are they labeled, because if not I can't see it. I will look again to make sure I'm not missing it, but they should be labeled.

@cashmere - I think for using straight RTP, your map looks nice. My only issue is the alignment of things - such as the beds against the walls, etc. - but I know that is more of an issue with the RTP and there is no perfect solution except to edit them in something like GIMP to make them align better. Also, I assume there is a reason for the ladder in the kitchen? It looks a little out of place.

Yeah, I guess I can use those bedroom tiles that they change the alignment to fit better with the wall. My aim was kinda to go 100% RTP. The ladder's supposed to go to the attic or something.

That looks fantastic Hian!
Thanks! It's a heavy work in progress, but me and the people I work with are pretty excited about this one.

I know cashmere, it's one of the hardest things about going straight RTP, that stupid alignment issue. I'm sure they do it to fit more tiles in but, still, it looks odd.

My other complaint about the RTP is the dull color pallette. I think I've been spoiled by Luna and Celianna - I just love the bright colors of their work.

You posted your map in the screenshots feedback thread. When someone posted the map was too dark, you shot back that players thought it was just fine. Since it didn't appear you were concerned about the overlay, I assumed you wanted feedback on the map itself. As mlogan wrote, please be more specific about what you want critiqued so that others don't waste their time providing unwanted feedback.

@Hian

I like the character selection map. It looks cool. Are those both female characters?

@mlogan

I agree. The RTP does look washed out. I wish I was more Photoshop literate so I could recolor them to something more rich.

@Mister Big T

It looks good. The only thing that made me scratch my head a little is the cactus/pumpkin thing in the corner. Is it part of the puzzle?

Nah, actually they're common in the Lava pit, there's quite several of them around.

Title-screen for the project I posted above.

Nope. Only the one on the right, in green, is female.

Thanks!

It's really simple. It's essentially just two pictures over a black screen. By having a transparent character stand locked between two on-touch activated events, on top of a third event that doesn't have anything on its first page, surrounded by impassable tiles, it's very easy to script a fade between the two, and add a sound-effect.

I.E push left and the left event fades in the left picture with a sound effect, activates a switch(and deactivates the right side switch, if you pressed right before left) and moves the character back to the center, which is now a press button event. Press right and the reverse happens.

The two pages on the center event that are activated by pushing left or right, of course, initiates the game.

Also, I have a fog effect to liven up the scene.

Graphically, it's not that special though - it's a rip-off of one of the earlier Tenchu Stealth Assassin titles, with a more lively color-palette :p

@hian: That is one really clever way to do the selection screen.  Would never have thought of that.  I'll have to add it to my list of things to try in my next project. :)
