Thanks buddy. I think you can do better than pasting in a few trees on a flat empty map. Stop using parallax resources and fancy grass fades as a crutch and actually design a map, no amount of them will make a bad map good. Your map lacks the basics; where's the exits, where are you trying to guide the player to, what's the point of the map? Look at Guardia Forest from Chrono Trigger, see the difference?

bring in some positivity. Or I will shut you down with negativity. Don't be an a*shole, famous quote from me. Even if the map is ugly, you don't reply to someone saying it's ugly or saying it's the worst map you've seen in a while because it might hurt the person. But hey, I'm a good guy. I suggest keeping your mouth shut next time if you're going to be a prick about it.

Stridah, you can't just insult someone either for criticizing your map, quit it.

Esbie, have some more tact, please. Explain your reasoning for disliking a map and offer ways to improve it. This thread is to help people, not to put people down.

I havent posted in here in a hot minute so here u go.
Hey Stridah, been a while indeed.  For us both haha.

When you create your maps try to give the player some direction.  Currently in that map I have no idea which areas are accessible or where I should even go.  It looks like a bunch of things just thrown together currently.

I advise starting with a rough layout of your map then build around it.

It doesn't have to be fancy or anything.  Just a layout to where you want the player to go.  Some of my layouts begin with paper and pen even.

The map at the very bottom of this post is based on this layout.

Also I know you hate shadows but they make a huge difference!

What I do with shadows for trees and other random objects is I first make a copy and flip vertical.  CTRL U and make it completely black.  Then Transform > Skew



Then set it to like 30% opacity.

Currently still WIP on the map below, hopefully finish sometime tomorrow.  It's going to be raining in the final version and have reflective puddles on the ground for puzzle purposes.

The tree blocking the path at the bottom is there on purpose too btw.  Part of the environment puzzle.

Been reworking some of my mechanics, and with it, the HUD. I've still got work to do (like implementing TP), but out of these three, which do you guys prefer?

@sanguine, there is lterally no purpose to my map, i was just practicing grass & put trees on top so it is not just grass lol

@Sanguine: Stunning maps, as for the title screen, maybe make the background a little lighter? I could just about make out the stars.

@Ikari: I like it, but maybe add some decor? Such as suits of armor or weapons on the wall?

Hey Mirage, I really like the atmosphere of your maps. Very warm and cozy.

There's something about the bottom map though - I think it's the placement of the bookshelves. It seems a bit scattered or something for a library room. I think what I would do is repeat the pattern on the top left (the shelves 3 tiles across) all the way down the left side, with another row down the middle. I just think of very orderly rows of shelves when I think of a library.

These ones are the successive temples (aka dungeons), no detail or anything, just the external structure. (Probably will make another one even more bomnbastic and large than the rest as a "final dungeon".

The ground, water and cliff tiles look like BenBen's.  If so, I suggest you use his flowers and grass as well, because the Ace tiles don't work.
Just a question.. Who's BenBen?

BenBen is a very talented French(?) graphic artist who produced some amazing tile sets.  I don't think he's doing that sort of work any more.

His tiles are not all easy to use in Ace as they were basically done for XP.  I'm told that even in XP they are tricky because many of them are simply huge.  He also uses a very different palette and saturation from the RTP, so mixing them with other tiles is not usually a good idea.

Here is a link to a map I posted recently in this thread using some of his tiles.  In the spoiler you can see the original colours/saturation, as the screen shot has various lighting effects added.  These trees are among his smaller ones

Benben was found to be plagiarizing tiles that are made by Euphony and such though for certain commercial games. I also noticed he used materials like FMA's Magic circles and such, so be careful using his stuff.

Oh yikes, I was sort of hoping to use his work for commercial.


Thing is, I use macksprites for my game and I think a lot of the tiles simply won't fit.. Like the RTP. I'm not sure what will work.

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
