@ksjp17 Oh that's just a widening of the bridge. It doesn't come in contact with the lower area. I just realized that I forgot to give the bridge a shadow. Maybe it will make things more clear.

Man, I wish I was cool enough to figure out how parallax mapping and lighting worked.

Currently working on a forest segment for my first project, sticking to using the default resources and editor for now.

Going to need to find some bigger trees soon...

It's been a while since I shared my homemade tile map with you all. I've added a few things from the last time and could use some feedback on whether they all fit together ok. The seat especially is giving me trouble. overall I think the whole thing works.

@Paladin How about shrink the rug so that it end right before the couch?  That way they don't sort of blend together

Yeah, it does sort of blend. I have tried changing that before, but it doesn't seem to help. hmmm. Maybe I should give up on the seat and leave it as just the stools.

@Paladin-Cleric

I like the design of the seat, but the colours are virtually identical to the carpet.  Why not try a recolour of the seat and see how that works?  That might be easier than recolouring the carpet.  The other thing as a map, rather than showcasing the tiles, I don't think people would put the seating so that they had their backs to the fire.  It needs to be somewhere else.

@Kanax

I think shadows would help a lot.

@EliteZeon

Pandamaru has some tree autotiles on her resource thread which soften that soul-sucking black around the tree trunks.  You might find that gives a better feel to the map.  They also have slightly rounded corners, so look less blocky.

That port has come on a lot since the initial draft, and the fog effect looks good.  Very reminiscent of sea fog.
Thank you :)

Still along way to go! Its a big map and the biggest  parallax I have done!

@Kanax

Adding the shadow has made all the difference.  The map makes sense now.

@Pikachu:

I'll play the nitpicky guy here. In addition to mlogan's remark, I'll add that you dont' usually find water lillies near waterfalls. The water would be too turbulent.

Also, did you use a World tile for the little crescent shaped ponds? Nice idea. If you can erase the little palm tree beside it, it'll look better.

@Pikachu: Nice atmosphere. I like the sparkle effect in the water. But I'm not a big fan of the brown borders around all the water. It looks like the water is cut into the land instead of being more natural. But I think, that may be an effect of the autotile.

I agree with the others, that you have to have a height change in the landscape when you are using waterfalls. Like cliffs.

I don't mind the waterlilies. It really depends on the waterfall size, if something can grow nearby it. With a small waterfall like this, there could be waterlilies, especially in the corners.

@mlogan

There actually is a change in land height, it's just that it's not very steep, and that's why I won't use a cliff tile. Someone who doesn't know about the RTP wouldn't bat an eye, anyway.

@cabfe

They're just there to make it look pretty. Same thing goes for the waterfalls. Without them, the map wouldn't look as good. And yeah, good idea. I'll erase the palm tree.

Uhhh, okay your map, do what you want. But it does weird things to the eyes making the map look more flat than it is supposed to be.

@Ansreng

Nice atmosphere to the map.  Just a couple of things struck me.  The tiles for the wall in the kitchen are very similar to the floor tiles, so that the eye is almost tricked into thinking that the wall is also floor.  Maybe something with a tiny bit more difference would help there.

The second thing is the television.  The light effect is, I think, meant to imply that the source is the TV screen.  In which case, it would be the full width of the screen, not just partial width, and would have slightly shallower angles.  It is very cone shaped.  Also, if it's emitting light, I would expect to see some hint of a picture on it.

@Ansreng:

Additionally to what ksjp said, your kitchen looks like there is a light source somewhere. But on the map you can't see any. Maybe adding a little lamp or a light switch which would indicate a light source on the ceiling would be a good idea. Other than that, I like the map :)

I played around with Candacis new tiles from the ReStaff Release and created a foggy forest section :)

Trouble is, that without a one tile visible change of height there are zero ways of indicating a change in height, so it looks absolutely flat but with a waterfall error.

I think you are being a bit too sanguine about people not batting an eye.  And even if some people don't notice, don't you want your map to be as good as it could be?  But your game, your decision. (shrugs)

Thx :D

Most of the credit belongs to Candacis, she created those tiles. Although, the fog is mine °^°

No seriously, everybody who likes the RTP style should check out these tiles :)

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
