So I thought to myself. How can I make an RPG that doesn't take to much effort to learn and is easy to get into? STRIP DOWN EVERYTHING! No Classes, No Big Menus, and No Getting Lost!

Pretty much, because I lost version 5 to multiple instances of hardware failure and had to reboot from scratch, i'm trying to strip out most of Ace's default features to get it to run really smooth like.

One of the features I stripped down and modded was the menu system. My goal was to drop a lot of the vx features and make it run a lot more smoothly. It also doesn't pause the game (unless on

the save screen) so you got to be smart about where you pull the menu up at. Here is a screenshot of what it looks like (and obviously leaks a few features i'm hoping to add in). so menu perspective,

what do you think? Remember I am trying to match a plain but easy to look at type of menu.

@Boldpaste, it's simple yet appealing in it's own way, and it looks like it has what you need in the menu. I'm not too sure how to feel about the menu not pausing the actual game.... but it should add some sort of strategy to the game.

@Boldpaste I like the menu, it's simple and easy to read. That said I can't say I'm fully convinced by the idea of an RPG with most of the features gone... is it more like an adventure game then? The tiles are nice too btw.

I've been quite busy recently, but I've had some time to play around with this little experimental project of mine. I'd love to hear what you think about it, as the color scheme is really weird... do the tiles meld together or are they still distinguishable? I had to go with this color scheme because of something else that I'm still working on, a lot of research to do... it's my little secret ;) .

Anyway, spoilered since I went with 3 pics to give you a better feel of what it looks like. Blood and ''gore'' (as violent one can be with sprites) as well as things like flags will stay colored to stand out, still deciding on other things that will be permanently colored. Also, no characters yet - still working on those.

@Crazycrab:

I don't know what kind of game you intend to do, but unless it's a fantastic movie horror type (paranormal and so), the blood splatters look random and impossible.

It personally gives me a Sin City impression.

@Cabfe Yeah, a lot of paranormal stuff, you're right about the randomness though. I'm still working on it, but eh there is a lot of ghosts like poltergeists around and body parts... throw them around... gets a bit messy ^^' I'm going for an RPG, but with a bunch of horror / survival elements.

@KanaX Everyone keeps mentioning that movie to me, I feel so ignorant having never watched it... I probably should have a look. ;)

@Boldpaste Thanks, I'll have a look. That website is pretty awesome gotta say, a look of exceptional pixel art, always fun to look at. About time I learned more about it anyway...

Another updated version of the map I've been working on (in case anyone is wondering, it's not the full map, but a significant part of it):

I haven't fully implemented the the shadows, but I have made the roofs a bit more unified, grouped houses made of similar material together with wooden ones towards the left, and brick and stone towards the right.

@DragonVine:

I really like the structure of your houses, they're really good :)

Although, I would try to set the entrance not just at the front side of the houses, a side entrance sometimes would break this "dollhouse" look.

And you should add a few more plants on some grass areas, because there are some bigger spots, which may look empty.

But all in all a nice map, with interesting structures :)

@CrazyCrab - You can see the editor background in the A3/A4 tiles so it looks like you've set up the transparency wrong, I'd import those tiles again. The second screenshot doesn't make any sense, it's like you've just stuck down tiles without any thought or reason.

@DragonVine - I'd recommend shift clicking to get rid of the autotile edge where they meet other walls, it's a small detail but I think it makes a difference. Have you tried using a different road tile, I think the one you're using might be a bit too busy.

A section of the street that the protagonist lives on, this city is going to take a while :headshake:

@Boldpaste: Your menu needs a bigger gap between the menu options.

Looks awesome! :D

May I ask which tileset you used? Could this be the zombie survival pack?

This is my second attempt at an outdoor map (or at least a portion of that map). It's the small farm where my game starts. I tried to place things where I thought they would make sense. And yes, the forest is purposely dense around the perimeter... for this starting area of the game, I want to guide the player east toward the first village.

Really nice. What tileset are you using? Is it the Farm Tiles from the store?

A mix of stuff really - the ground tiles are Mack's, the cabin and barn are from Celianna's Fantastic Medieval Buildings set, and the trees are RTP and variations by PandaMaru and Candacis. Other objects are from PandaMaru and Candacis - I think they did a fantastic job of matching the RTP, so it all looks like it goes together to me!

There are also some edits of my own - including the grass fringe edge along the buildings and fence to help anchor them to the ground, and some recolored trees.

More heavy WIP pictures, one of a possible tent scene where you'll be doing all your menu/party-managment stuff,

and one of the skill progression system menu, known as the runic mirror.

Non of these scenes are completed though - not by a long shot - these are just the general gist of the style.

Later I'll add info notes and menu buttons to the runic mirror, and liven up to the map scene by adding a bit more

traces of activity, items etc.

That's really inventive, Hian. The way you've utilized the nice textures of the backgrounds to create a certain sense of atmosphere and mood indicates skill and vision.

Edit: Also holy shizmoda, Esby, don't make me envious, I want your cities.

I WANT YOUR CITIES

He mad, but he cute :kaopride:

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
