@Banquo, the player CAN almost go anywhere from the start. The way my game is going to work is that you end up moving to a different world a couple of times in the game, so this is the first world where most of it is open, then once you've finished there you move onto another world entirely. Some of the locations won't be open from the beginning if they are areas designed to advance the story, while some other parts will be there for players to freely explore in their own time.

I do agree about parts being empty and boring in a lot of places though. Obviously it's not finished yet, with the snowy part of the map being half empty still, but I'm definitely looking for some ideas as to what I can fill those areas with.

Thought I might get some feedback on my worldmap. Actual size in game is 80x90 and that one mountain in the desert is cut off because the top is evented to switch from active to inactive at the end of a quest.

Been experimenting with upgrading my maps, but I have a hard time seeing when something is off or is blah (100% audio-oriented person here). As far as a marketplace goes, how does this strike you?

The issue I noticed right away is that you have a lot of different roof tiles. I suggest that you put some restraints on that for the sake of cohesion and aesthetics. Not saying you have to stick with only the one, but 3 should be enough.

@MektiKwiiger I could see that. How's this for an improvement? Anything else that should be changed?

Some UI screenshots from Sore Losers: Riot Grrrl. The game uses a skill-tree system and I've just got through making it look a little better than it used to:

@Sated:

Design, colour choice and font remind me of something - probably some game. I like the tidy, clearly arranged layout and colours. The size of the pictures as awfully small though, is that RM2k3s standard resolution? Never mind, I just checked out the game on your webpage. Looking good! ;)

Well, you can read everything anyways, so it doesn't hurt the UI.

Hey guys! I'm trying to make a forest, so I started with the entrance, and I would like to hear some feedback if you don't mind about helping me.

I'm going to show you what I've done, it's a reeeally really simple map, and I would like to hear your opinion about how I could improve the mapping, because I look at it and it doesn't convince me...it looks really basic and it doesn't give the impression of being a forest's map.

Here it is:

Hi Besu! Well, there are 3 things I would say.  First, the map has an error - you haven't used shift-click mapping to connect the river with the top part of the bridge.

More generally, the map isn't too bad, but I notice that it's a big square.  I think most people would suggest making it a more asymmetric and natural-looking shape--forests and clearings don't grow in square batches after all.

Finally, something about the waterfall doesn't look right.  I haven't made many waterfalls, so I don't know exactly how to fix it, but I know there's a better way to do it, either by using different tiles or by putting some more elevation on either side of it.

Yeah, that's the native resolution of RM2K3. We've come a long way to get RMMV with its forum-breaking resolution! RM2K3 games will actually open up at 2x resolution by default, but I've always prefered posting screenshots in the native resolution.

@SquallStorm: The only criticism I would have is that you probably shouldn't put grassland in the middle of the desert continent. There's not a lot of chance of grass growing in the middle of a desert like that. Everything else is fine though :)

@Besu: I can't see your image. Is the link broken.

Oh. My. God. You saved my life with that tip of Shift+Click. I have 57 hours of RPG Maker VX Ace and I didn't know about that...I feel like a completely noob...Thanks for all your advices!

@Sated Nope, it's not broken :(

@besu no worries, i think i used it for a similar period of time before i knew about it too, then one day i watched one of Liberty's mapping tutorials (highly recommend these on youtube, if you want to improve your mapping) and was like ohhhhh :)

p.s. another thing regarding your map, the tile you've chosen for the water...try using the tile right NEXT to it.  I know in the editor it doesn't look as much like a water tile, but you will see that it actually is the real water tile. :)  the one you used, is more for like the top edges of where water meets higher land.

@Besu: Also, for the river you're using the wrong tile. What you have is an endless pit of water, it should be the water tile next to the one you're currently using. The current tiles are supposed to be for underwater 'cliffs'. It's a common mapping error that's really the fault of the maker for the order of the tiling :/

@Besu - I think I've figured out the waterfall - there's no cliff to go with it. The way it looks now, the water is coming down from some mysterious canopy lake.

As for figuring out a new layout - how do you intend this map to be used? Is it just for getting from place to place, or will there be a cutscene here? What sort of things would you put off the beaten path to reward the player for exploring? Answering those might help you figure out a new way to imagine this map.

@Besu: I can see it now. It must've been my internet being weird =/

Like someone already said, you need to shift-click when placing the bridge so that it looks like the water is flowing over it. And like someone else already said, you're using the wrong water tile. You should make the map less square so that it looks more natural; nature doesn't really like straight lines so you should try to avoid perfectly straight lines as much as possible when making maps like this. Same goes for the river itself, which is a bit too straight.

Hey guys! I'm working on a new project and wanted to post one of the maps that I'm most proud of as of now. I'm looking for suggestions as to what would make this cave even better! More objects? Better lighting? If you can think of it, let me know!! =3

Our latest feature is an interview with... me?!

People4_2 (Capelet off and on) added!

Just beat the last of us 2 last night and starting jedi: fallen order right now, both use unreal engine & when I say i knew 80% of jedi's buttons right away because they were the same buttons as TLOU2 its ridiculous, even the same narrow hallway crawl and barely-made-it jump they do. Unreal Engine is just big budget RPG Maker the way they make games nearly identical at its core lol.
Can someone recommend some fun story-heavy RPGs to me? Coming up with good gameplay is a nightmare! I was thinking of making some gameplay platforming-based, but that doesn't work well in RPG form*. I also was thinking of removing battles, but that would be too much like OneShot. I don't even know how to make good puzzles!
one bad plugin combo later and one of my followers is moonwalking off the screen on his own... I didn't even more yet on the new map lol.
