@Zephiur Close, they're from Neverwinter Nights 1. I have thought about converting the portraits from Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale into the same format as well, I just haven't had the time to get around to it with all the work the combat system still needs

@Virgil I'm using a modified version of Victor's Visual Equip script to make all the player sprites change based on your armor (wouldn't be a D&D game without a good amount character customization after all), but most of the equipment sprites don't have any poses, just regular walk animations. I'm no good at that kind of stuff myself, so I'll probably end up looking for an artist who could add a handful of poses to the existing sprites once my game is further along

Thanks a lot for the comments guys - a big help, and I really appreciate the compliments! I've fixed the shadows in the Inn Room, but that's nothing too exciting so I won't share that as a progress update. Here's a quick Before and After of the main room:

Changes:

- The tint was done in game. I let a bit more colour into it. I was going for a depressing look - I don't want the map to be too vibrant. I'm still undecided. Maybe a *touch* more gray?

- I took out my 1px eraser and tore up the carpet! I thought a place that scummy wouldn't have very nice carpet, so i frayed the edges.

- The barman, in his old age, probably shouldn't be somersaulting over the bar, so he now has a little gap where he can sneak out. (The beer is stored underneath the bar, out of sight!

- The bar now has two regular drinkers.

- Intensified the shadows under the stairs.

- Fixed the dark wall with the note on it.

- Added a bit of clutter to the table.

Any comments on this updated map would be a huge help, thanks!

I think a touch more gray (between that more color map and that gray map I think would be ideal) would help with the depressing feel you want. I think with the carpet it would look better if you erased it with the paintbrush and not the pencil. It looks a touch too choppy compared to the painterly feel the tiles have. But I definitely like the idea! You're definitely on the right track so far! :)

@Vergil I like the original more actually, minus the change to the counter, the absence of the tint just doesn't give it the same charming atmosphere.

I have to agree with above, the tint in the first one sets the atmosphere well. The other changes are all fine, though. Just the tint.

That's great for a first map! Keep up the good work! :D

The only thing that stands out to me is all the rocks, leaves, etc on the bridge and path. Is it meant to be a well-travelled road, or one people rarely use?

The blue mushrooms do not agree with my eyes. :( It just looks like something that would be in a fairytale or a dark cave.

Thanks again for the input guys. This map is looking much better thanks to all your words of wisdom

@Vindictive: A really nice looking forest map! As Gigglemoo pointed out, the stuff actually IN the path, especially on the bridge looks a little odd to me. Unless of course, as he suggested, it's a rarely visited area, then it kinda works. The one major thing which really stands out to me at a first glance is the water, especially the piece a couple of squares to the right of the bridge. It just sort of veers of on a very narrow tangent for one square. Mapping water is a real pain in VX because of the square nature of the tiles, but that very narrow offshoot doesn't make much sense to me. Could just be me.

Not sure about what I should do about my artists' work.

She's really talented, but the way she colors makes editing stuff hard,

plus it kinda stands out. I edited it, but I think it stands out even more.

What do you guys think?

Dang, does this person have an obsession with cats, but anyway, this takes place deep inside a fantasy forest. I used a lot of flowers and trees. (I also used this in a contest entry, but I want some feedback on it as well!)

@Avvy: get a different artist, that's not talented in the least.
@Avvy while Celianna is harsh, I do have to agree. I would get a new artist.

I didn't really have the balls to be that blunt, but I completely agree with Celianna here. That really doesn't look good at all. It's also clashing with the style of the entire rest of the game.

@Rimmintine The house looks great, but the pink foliage kind of looks like it's coming out of nowhere. The shot in general looks a little too cluttered; there's too many different types (and colors) of plant growing in one place. I think it would look better if you got rid of the pink trees and flowerbeds and replaced them with something that blends in a bit better.

@rimmintine: I really like that map. I don't know if its suppose to be fairy tale-ish, but it looks like that. The only thing is I'm not sure what that blue thing behind a tree in the corner is.

Giant Mushrooms....very smart of me, just to cover them up like that. >.< I didn't take them off for some reason.

Yes, it is fairy tale themed :) So I go the vibe down. Yes! :)

Well if it's fairy tale themed then why did you cover up the giant mushrooms?? xD
