It's too late for me to ask on my recent lost project, but it dawned on me that this could happen again and to lose 3 weeks of work, is just horrifying! Wow, DejaVu. Feels like I just made a post similar to this one just recently. Anyway, I installed the non Steam version of MV to prevent problems like this happening again and I realized even in Non Steam RPG Maker MV could still end up doing the same thing. Before I get off topic or say something stupid (Sorry, I did the second already), let me explain what took place and maybe there is something someone knows of that could fix it should it happen again.
Last week I went to load the file "Game.rpgproject" into the Steam version of RPG Maker MV. I didn't even edit anything, I just loaded it to look over what I had done so far. For some unknown reason, the Steam client shut itself down and the RPG Maker MV program. I can understand it happening if I logged into my account on another pc, but that wasn't the case and I also had the sae location set to One Drive so I can edit my data from any pc.
Anyway, when I reloaded the RPG Maker MV program, I tried loading the "Game.rpgproject" file and to my horror, I get a message that "Game.rpgproject" could not be loaded. I tried this on two different machines with the same outcome. I decided to install the non drm version on both machines, then went into one drive and deleted the entire project then started RPG Maker MV all over again, stared at the screen then took a break for several days to think back on what I did before so I could hopefully repeat it (not repeat what killed the file, repeat the work I had done that made what I was designing interesting). Normally when I want a backup of something, I just do a "SAVE AS" and add to the name "blahblah.backup" and no, I don't name it blahblah. Just using it as an example. Because RPG Maker MV doesn't have a save as feature, the next best thing which I now regret for not doing is just copy pasting the entire folder to another location and name the folder backup_todaysDate_time. It had dawned on me long after I deleted the errored project that this could happen again, or worse, which has happened to me with other programs that despite making lots of backups, there would end up being some kind of fatal problem that carried over into 20+ backups that always tended to rear its ugly head after I completed it, making me go through months of work to find out it had started almost at the beginning and then I had to start all over again or do a ton of manual editing by taking the good parts and exporting them piece by piece into a section that was good.
Anyway, what I am asking, and looking for, if it exists, is if there is a repair program or utility that can get into the "Game.rpgproject" file and fix it whether automatically or manually or even re-index to connect all the maps back together again. I say re-index because looking at the format of RPG Maker MV, it looks like the file structure of RPG Maker MV is similar to the windows registry.
On a side note, I did try contacting Steam to find out why what happened, happened, so as not to or never to repeat it and um, is it me, or are they like a Vogon Construction fleet? Just in case no one knows what a Vogon is, here is a paste from the guide: Here is what to do if you want to get a lift from a Vogon: forget it. They are one of the most unpleasant races in the Galaxy. Not actually evil, but bad-tempered, bureaucratic, officious and callous. They wouldn't even lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal without orders – signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public inquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters.
