So, I was wondering whether it is even possible for a game that is patched every now and then to reach version 2.0.

Have you seen something like that anywhere before? I mean, I understand that 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 and so on are used if there are new features and stuff, but can the first digit ever increase? What would be a justification for it?

Increasing the first digit is usually when a significant changes is done is done.  For example, Blizzard changes the first digit whenever they release a new World of Warcraft expansion, where as the second digit is for content patches and the third is for minor revisions.  2.3.1 would be version 2, revision 3, subrevision 1.

Not every company follows these standards the same way.  For example, Firefox used to change the first number about every 1-2 years, however in the past 2 years it's gone from 4 to 23 with hardly much of a difference between them.  Other companies might jump several numbers to signify there being more changes than previous (going from 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.5 for example).

It's also worth noting that what comes after 1.9 is 1.10 since it's not supposed to be a decimal.

The first digit would increase if the developer decides to increase it - no matter what reason is behind that decision.

For example there was a big program that simply skipped several numbers, going from 4.0 to 7.0 - just because a companion program which was often used together with that one was always two numbers farther ahead and the company decided those two programs should have the same numbers on those versions that were always used together...

I would assume a remake of one's own RPG Maker (or otherwise) game would be a 2.0, a remake of that remake a 3.0 and so on. Just adding features or bugfixes to the first version would be 1.1, 1.2, etc. Incremental updates during development probably would be 1.0.1, 1.0.2 or 1.0a, 1.0b, etc.

Of course, going past 1.0.26 using the letter method presents its own issue. Would 1.0z be followed by 1.0aa or 1.1?

Ragnarok Online 2

Both of these are basically considered 'updates' by everyone instead of an actual new, second game.

Whoever says that is a stupid head, no game company ever has done an update that magnitude of complete overhaul of graphical systems from the base models and such. How entitled would one have to be to expect game companies to do a free update of that levels?

RO shot.

RO 2 shot. It would literally be impossible to achieve this on the original RO engine.

The 2 in RO2 is part of the game name.

You usually don't include the version of the game in the title when you are advertising it.

How I use the numbers are if I make a major revision (so a jump from 1 to 2 for my game was because I fixed a major bug and the change from 2 to 3 rebalanced issues, added a few more things that could be considered major, etc.). It all depends on if the change warrants perhaps another play through of my game for the die hard players.

This is how I've done it always.

1.01-1.9  version is like patching of some bug and such that was found.

2.0  is a major update and can include even new elements introduced to the game, such as say adding more npc's into the game or a new script that adds day and night system.  Then 2.01 and such will be fixing the bugs that were missed before and were introduced in the new patch and so and forth.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
