Ooh good question. Well, a few things inspired my game...

Pokemon inspired the travelling side of my game, how the MC goes around the world discovering new strange but exciting places and good and bad people. I'm mapping many exotic looking places so the player can see several different types of places as they play the game, including an ancient Egyptian temple which is half flooded by the sea...

Another thing which inspired me to make a game is that I love writing and telling stories, and a game is a story that you interact with and play. It can also be educational, depending on the game you are playing. I'm always dreaming up new ideas, worlds and characters so it just made sense to bring all of that to life even more by putting it all into a game...!

my game got inspired by fire emblem and mount and blade from a gameplay perspective, this means fast paced, easy to pick up tactical combat on a grid + a sandbox campaign in wich you have absolute freedom to achieve your objectives.

And there is another inspiration that is also the main theme of both the story and the gameplay, if you are familiar with pen and paper rpgs you may know this classic turn of events: the feeling when the game director/dungeon master, etc spends hundreds of hours crafting an unique setting with lots of lore, interesting characters, mythos, politics, etc...

And then the players decide it would be funnier to just roleplay chaotic evil sociopaths who do everything they can to derail the story the director has put so much care in writing. And agaisnt all odds, they succeed!
The difference is that i actually want players to do exactly that.

These are by far my favorite kind of topics :)

I think we all are inspired by some other videogames we played as kids, weither we like to admit it or not. Unless we came from another earth where videogames never existed, or we lived in complete isolation, devoided of all outisde influences and one day we opened our eyes and declared "let there be videogames!" lol

I started a lot of project back when I first stumbled across RM2k first and 2k3 later (wish I actually ended at least one :headshake:).
My first project was a traditional rpg, so... you can guess, Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger helped shape not only the world but also many aspects of the plot.
Also, it's not really a videogame, but the movie Akira was a big ispiration for another project I was working on (and also the reson I got into motorcycles - alongside Terminator 2 and the Ghost Rider comics - but that's another story... :guffaw: )

My current project is heavily inspired by (ow, who am I kidding, it's a damn ripoff) the original Resident Evil (the first ever title of the saga)

edit: LOL the forum changed da*n into dayum by itself... that's Glorious XD

Mine is inspired by events in my life, but I can't deny that after playing Always Sometimes Monsters, it became a source of inspiration, particularly for the graphics.

VX Ace, thank you very much :)

I'm struggling with the limitations, but it's too far along to switch to MV, should have waited for MV to come out to start the game.

For one of my current projects, I am drawing inspiration from my favorite game from my childhood Phantasy Star. However, the story is based on one of our Pathfinder games.

The other project is inspired by Japanese horror films.

Well, my first game was inspired by the old Shareware RPG Wilzard's Lair (its an old DOS game from the late 80's). I was 12 at the time so all I did was try to one up them on everything (you got one alternate world? I got TWO!). It was...a mess.

Since then I'd say it's a mix of different RPG's. The old Gold Box games though (Pool of Radience, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of The Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness) were a huge influence though, especially the fact that in those games most boss battles were over in under 5 minutes. Some of that was graphical limitations, and some of that was bosses hit so hard you either defeated it fast, or you died. Since I've never liked games where boss battles take longer than it takes to watch a movie (*cough* Persona 3 *cough*) I decided to try to make mine that fast paced.

Also I took some inspiration from FF7. One thing I did was in the late game I made it so that all boss battles you enough EXP for one level when you win them (unless you are so overleveled that the EXP to gain a level is really high). I remember running into that in ff7 when I played it and though it a nice reward for beating a boss the bonus level up due to the EXP gained. No idea incidentally why most FF games don't give EXP on boss battles, maybe those who do low level playthroughs hated that?

I always seem to come back to games like suikoden, any shin megami tensei game and some other real old rpgs like
Legend of dragoon, breath of fire, shining force, phantasy star, etc.

I think I got at least a little bit of inspiration from every game I play. Just some quick examples:
- In a game I used to work on, NPCs would have emoticon flashing above their heads to indicate that they can be interacted with. This is what I learned from Xillia. In that game, every NPC that you can talk to has smiley above them.
- It was also a fan game, too, so a lot of it was inspired by Mega Man Battle Network and some other anime tropes. :stickytongue:
- The game I am working has a huge plot element that was largely inspired by, not a game, but a manga called "Revenge Classroom". Someone got sick of being bullied and goes on a murdering spree.

Since I've never liked games where boss battles take longer than it takes to watch a movie (*cough* Persona 3 *cough*) I decided to try to make mine that fast paced.

Huh? Which boss is this? I've played P3P and I don't think I have had to spend too much time on a boss, as I recall.

@Mr. Detective : The final boss. I always overlevel before facing it, but I've heard of players who didn't overlevel taking 3 hours to attempt that battle once. Though I remember the last full moon boss was pretty long too, I once clocked it at 30 minutes. Now granted I played the PS3 FES version so they could have toned it down a little for the PSP version.

Though it's not the worst offender. Anyone remember Rogue Galaxy (PS2)? That game's final boss had 10 forms. I remember one attempt took me 2 hours, then I got KO'd by a cheap one shot attempt on form 10. You can guess how happy I was about that.

Current project? I took the idea from many sources mixed up together.
  • The elemental category was inspired from --> mainly western games. With Wesnoth as the main inspiration
  • Perk system mainly inspired from --> Prototype 2 / Bethesda Games (Fallout 3/NV/4 and Skyrim)
  • Some skill mechanic/balancing inspired from --> Granblue Fantasy
  • Simplified armor mechanic/category inspired from --> Azur Lane
  • Armor health point --> XCOM
There're probably some small amount of inspirations taken from other sources that maybe I forgot.

The game I have been working on has been inspired by an old gameboy game by Wisdom Tree. It is a word guessing game where you try to guess the word before the animals all jump over the fence. Yes, they do jump over a fence. :p

I would say a lot of games inspired me in developing a horror focused game. The main ones being Danganronpa, Zero Escape, Witch's House, Dark Souls. To a lesser extend, I was also inspired by Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton, Clock Tower, and Silent Hill.

My main project is heavily inspired by Dragon Quest. The puns, enemy designs and names, music and so on are all inspired from it. With sprinkles of Final Fantasy, Paper Mario, and Cooking Mama.

New sprite in action! A-1-2 looks kinda goofy might need to upscale some of the tiles and decorations. And maybe change eliza's creepy laugh to more of a neutral mouth
