My current Project is heavily inspired by the mario and luigi series both in gameplay and tone. It has two characters with different abilities and the player controls both stimultaniously. Another strong influence is the item usage from the Zelda games.

I am also very interested in norse myth. My go-to pitch for The World of Grangard (which I also plan to write some stories in) is ”Imagine lord of the rings as written by Eichiro Oda”.

What games inspired me? The big ones are Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Animal Crossing. Other than that are Flash Games I used to play in the past, as well as every RPG under the sun.

In general, I like to take inspiration from Paper Mario. Although Earthbound has been growing on me recently. I also get a lot of ideas from playing Dungeons and Dragons.

Currently? Modern Kemco RPGs, the by-the-number RPGs that flood the mobile stores. I have been playing Kemco games recently as a guideline of what not to do with RPG storytelling and game structure. It's hard to explain, I'm not out to create a parody of generic RPGs, I'm pretty sure that's been done enough to have enough material to parody that. Basically, whenever I think 'this could have been done better', 'did they do this trope for the sake of the trope?' or 'that was a poor design/storytelling choice', I take note of it. I review it during development, and I see how the criticism can be used to improve my current game.

Hylics is a big one. Anything auteur driven by one person or a small group is really inspiring.

Right now it is a game with the element of gamble from drakemall. In the game every player should buy mystery box with cool stuff and get one random item from the box in any case (it's a win-win game). I want to win an iPhone X one day so I continue playing

Originally, my project, Extrate, is inspired by the Mother series, but as the storyline takes place in a more medieval era than modern, I needed inspiration from other games like Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire and Zelda and some animes like Dragon Ball and Katekyo Hitman Reborn. I very much like the nonsense style of Earthbound, the environment of the classic SNES RPGs and the animes story style, so I decided to mix these things for create my RPG Maker project.

I'd say some games that have inspired my funny little key game is:

The Neverhood for it's surreal and goofy kind of style and tone that I want a good amount of my games to have similar.

and Chulip, as it's a bizarre adventure game that I feel, inspires me and my style with all my goofy oddball characters and stories which Chulip has similar.

I will also list Ripened Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love for pretty much the same reasons as Chulip.

Definitely chrono trigger/cosmic star heroine style games. But i also get inspiration from FFT and super mario rpg.

What I draw from these games the most is the level of detail in the characters and their animations that bring them to life. Its huge

I guess I'm inspired to some extent by all the games I've played.
As far as I'm aware, my current project is inspired mostly by :
  • Star Ocean 2 : choice of main character, character specific events, multiple endings
(I would love the combat system too, but that's probably not an option unless I rewrite a huge part of the default battle code).
  • Suikoden : characters collection, trade shops, weapons upgrades, duel battles (even if it's using the same system as the normal ones so far), tactical battles.
  • Wild Arms : party spliting (also thinking about character specific map skills but maybe not in this project).
  • Breath Of Fire : some plot and battle elements.
  • KotoR, Jade Empire, Mass Effect : dark/light options, romance events, story branching.
  • Assassin's Creed 2 : base building, town management.
That's about the systems I've implemented in my project so far (not including what wasn't directly inspired by anything). There might be a bit more before I'm done.

For me it's very much my childhood RPG's from the SNES.

Earthbound is still what I label as my 'favourite game' of all time. It got an interesting emotional reaction out of me. It's not like I felt the same kind of thing as when I first played FF3/6 or Chrono Trigger back in the day. Those were WOW games and part of my SNES trifecta of my fav RPG's (Earthbound and those two. Honourable mention to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, which got me into RPG's. Friggin' amazing game). The music, the story, the characters; like holy crap, what awesome games.

I think with Earthbound it was the weirdness, the 'modern' setting of it, the quirks. It had some wild and bizarre enemies and locations and hot dang the music in it was incredible. HILARIOUS dialogue and characters! Oh man! I love it. And not to mention the simple but perfect toony graphics.

So for my project, it's having a contemporary setting with an easy story. Something not complicated but interesting and fun, I hope. Wild and nuts enemies. Real out-there stuff is what I'd like with some good quirky, dry humor. If I can pull it off, haha.

But besides video games, in my mid- to later 20's (I'm 33 now, lolol) I got into reading H.P. Lovecraft and those stories smote me good. So now I love all that kind of sci-fi thriller/horror stuff. So I'm thinking I'll have some cosmic unsettling horror elements, too. Not super dark, but just enough to be like uh whoa. Earthbound did have some of that. So, fingers crossed! Who knows how long it'll take to make. Might end up being an off and on project, but we'll see.

To surmise:

Earthbound
Chrono Trigger
FF3/6

My RPG Trifecta of SNES.

There were other great ones, but those are my tops. :thumbsup-right:

My current project takes a lot of inspiration from Pokemon, since it's my best reference for a monster catching game. I tried to go my own direction with it based on things that annoyed me in Pokemon and games like it. That said, the title screen idea was pretty much taken straight from the original Red and Blue, where in-game monsters would randomly appear as long as you idled there. :kaoswt2:

My next project will be chock full of inspirations from my childhood with old PlayStation RPGs though, being a passion project from my youth. Story elements from FF9, class customization from FF5 (PS1 in the US) and Tactics, world customization from Legend of Mana, meta structure from Valkyrie Profile, and a few other bits and pieces. :kaopride:

All the boring, trite JRPGS I've played with the angst-ridden spiky haired-hero. I'll admit it, I can't stand 99% of JRPGs. So why am I making one? Well to make the kind of JRPG I want to play.

Its similar in my fiction, I mostly read non-fiction, staying far away from fiction, why? Because I write the stuff I want to read.

Its really the only way to go for me.

I've always found Game Over screens to be a bit boring. Mostly because I see them too often.
Tried to mix it up for the jam.
