For me it's very much my childhood RPG's from the SNES.
Earthbound is still what I label as my 'favourite game' of all time. It got an interesting emotional reaction out of me. It's not like I felt the same kind of thing as when I first played FF3/6 or Chrono Trigger back in the day. Those were WOW games and part of my SNES trifecta of my fav RPG's (Earthbound and those two. Honourable mention to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, which got me into RPG's. Friggin' amazing game). The music, the story, the characters; like holy crap, what awesome games.
I think with Earthbound it was the weirdness, the 'modern' setting of it, the quirks. It had some wild and bizarre enemies and locations and hot dang the music in it was incredible. HILARIOUS dialogue and characters! Oh man! I love it. And not to mention the simple but perfect toony graphics.
So for my project, it's having a contemporary setting with an easy story. Something not complicated but interesting and fun, I hope. Wild and nuts enemies. Real out-there stuff is what I'd like with some good quirky, dry humor. If I can pull it off, haha.
But besides video games, in my mid- to later 20's (I'm 33 now, lolol) I got into reading H.P. Lovecraft and those stories smote me good. So now I love all that kind of sci-fi thriller/horror stuff. So I'm thinking I'll have some cosmic unsettling horror elements, too. Not super dark, but just enough to be like uh whoa. Earthbound did have some of that. So, fingers crossed! Who knows how long it'll take to make. Might end up being an off and on project, but we'll see.
To surmise:
Earthbound
Chrono Trigger
FF3/6
My RPG Trifecta of SNES.
There were other great ones, but those are my tops.
