General Poetry
I did a quick search and didn't find a recent poetry thread, and I didn't look too far back in fears of doing a necro, so I decided to set up a new thread. Anywho, how about a good old-fashioned poetry thread? I'm not massively into it but every now and then I get the urge to write something. This thread is for posting your own works of poetry, and discussing some of your favourite poems/poets.
First and foremost, my favourite book of poetry is Rapture by Carol Ann Duffy, I feel like it's a book absolutely everyone can relate to, whether you've been in a relationship or not, almost everyone (possibly excluding asexual/aromantic people) can relate to the feelings she so masterfully expresses.
Here's a somewhat intimate and personal piece I wrote about my mam and her life. It may be confusing to some and to completely understand it might need a bit of dissection, but I enjoy that about poetry. A lot of people say that dissecting and over analysing poetry ruins it, but I for one love it and it makes me appreciate it even more so.
What a life
Young girl disliked and cherished, you meant so much
Confused, you try better. No, your best
You were hopeful maybe then
You laugh-play, hurdle; get beaten down undeservingly
Confused, you do your best
Fleeting is childhood, too mature already
Mother, and your mother’s mother
Overwhelming love and pain
Mistakes
The only consistency,
Overwhelming pain
You were hopeful maybe still
Happiness is…
Never always fickle.
Chained to disappointment there’s a price
Happiness is your own and another’s
You appreciate her more
You made your bed but you refuse to admit you did not do it alone.
Three more
Hectic and impractical. You have help
But it’s your battle
Three more
(Ir)rational joy you let others share
That is not just yours
Mature contemporary woman
No time for vacation
No time for sand and sea
You cry in the shower-
you want to run
No time for sand
“Sick”
Ensues laughter, life is joyous on occasion
Masking, you laugh
Responsibilities and weight; so much weight
It devours you, your optimism
Accepting, you laugh
No longer you struggle to fight
How you hate routine
Pay the toll, hope is gone
Praise God that bastard contract is ending.
That darling contract is finished,
How you loved routine
You think yourself undeserving
But you are loved
Your fight acknowledged
Your self-worth so very apparent
You think yourself unworthy
But our gratitude is disproving
Mother disliked and cherished, you mean so much
Confused, you try better. No, your best
You were hopeful maybe then
You laugh-play, hurdle; get beaten down undeservingly
Confused, you do your best
Fleeting is childhood, too mature already
