Ms Littlefish's BGS' and sounds fill me with ideas for a horror game. (lol I know, don't ask ^^)

Great work everybody! Too bad I couldn't find some time to contribute. =/

Oh, I really love this event. It was super productive, positive and cheering. It set a good mood for the holidays.

 Big hugs for all that participant in this in one or the other way.

Feedback for the Holiday Pack:

Avery - The lighthouse is awesome and I know the users will love it! Modern pieces, fairytale mushroomhouses, a face for the sceleton... So much and so good for use with the RTP. I'm jealous of this work. D: <3

Caz - Perfect for a castle or mansion. Sideway stairs are a good thing!

Michael Rookard - Amazing! I love the colours of this battleback. <3

Ms Littlefish - So much helpfull sounds to make a game more alive. Thank you very much!

Palladinthug - I have write this before > Reminds me of Secret of Mana :) Cool!

Scythuz - Sounds epic! It is good music for the final grand battle.

Slimmmeiske2 - Santa and his helper will come in handy for the christmas games out there! Thank you :)

Tyler Warren - xD I imagine someone drop his hat and try to pick it up and then it crawls away... Funny <3

Vexed - The resources are soooo cool. I love this style so much. It looks absolutely gorgeous! D: And the quality is unbelievable good.

Oh yes. Scythuz has worked her magic yet again, and produced an epic piece of battle music. I'd want this blaring when I go into battle, for certain.

We all know Scythuz isn't male or female but in fact a machine whose sole programming is to produce ridiculously awesome music like shown here.

Hey, Maru's right let's make the big feedback thing:

Avery - I really liked the modern tiles, those lockers look pretty good. Not that that awesome skeleton or the incredible lighthouse are any less, of course ;)

Caz - Great tiles! Those stairs look really cool, I can't help but think on the first room on the original resident evil when I look at them.

Michael Rookard - That's one sweet baqckground some great cutscene or battle could happen in front of it. I really like your color choices.

Ms Littlefish - Sound effects are pretty rare so it's quite a treat to get so many. Thanks a lot!

Palladinthug - Mushroomlicious! They also go great with your restaff material, thanks a lot!

Scythuz - Only worthy of the coolest of bosses, it sounds dignified, heroic and badass .Fantastic work!

Slimmmeiske2 - Those are some extremely adorable chars, makes you want to cuddle them or something.

Tyler Warren - Pretty funny and a very clever idea. The coloring is gorgeous, as well.

Vexed - What ca I say? Pop! is amazing, every new resource for it is an incredible gift. Thanks!
Thanks a ton for all the free resources everyone!

Special Delivery!

Avery, I think it goes without saying but that lighthouse is absolutely gorgeous. That is a definite “wow” piece. I also find the set of modern furniture extremely useful. I can find a place for every single piece in my game plan.

Caz, the wide sideways stairs are going to be highly useful for luxurious homes, but for locations like universities, and public buildings as well. Those are really special pieces, thank you for making them!

Michael Rookard, the almost water-color-like qualities of this background; I really enjoy that. There’s an organic-ness to this that really is a bit different and fresh.

Palla, it’s not really a secret that I find sentient mushrooms adorable for one odd reason to another. Thank you for continuing the expand the monster selection in across so many graphic styles.

PandaMaru, I mentioned it earlier in your resource thread, but I really want to repeat that the blue and green tones used throughout this set bring a lot of dimension and visual interest to this snow set. Winter sets can often be a bit monochromatic and stark, but these colors bring out the whimsical beauty of winter. And as well, the crib in the manger set is an extremely useful piece of furniture to have.

Scy, when you start out with a melancholy trumpet you know things are about to get really emotional. The chord change at at :23 and 1:06 is my favorite thing ever;  the hope of this party of characters fighting through the desperation is contained in that progression . Also, viola strums. Those are always Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas.

Slim, these sprites are really cute. And well, everything honestly needs a zombie variation because we all know that everything can have zombies if we want it to.

Tyler Warren, I really love your color pencil-like style. The critter is very cute. Maybe most people would find him creepy but I’d keep it as a pet! I really love that you also don’t use grayscale to shade white objects.

Vexed, this really is a lot of tiles! This set is very versatile because of the non-snow options, and many of the objects like the office furniture would be universally needed. Also, thank you for the “Happy Hanukkah” banner as well. :D

Very nice stuff.

How does one purchase something on the store to gift to someone else? By sending them the link or something?

yassss! Thanks so much you guys! I'm totally downloading right now. I can't wait to check everything out, but first... coffee.  :dizzy:

edit:
OK having coffee and checking out the goodies!

Avery: I love the school/dorm items and the lighthouse, but I can't get over this mushroom house...It's too perf.
Caz: I definitely needed fancy-type tiles. I really love the floor tiles and the color.
Michael Rookard: The battleback is absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of WoW hehe.
Ms Littlefish: I needed these BGS/SE in my life. I'm definitely going to get a lot of mileage out of these.
Palladinthug: omfg more shroomies. WAHHH. You can't have an rpg without bright adorable mushrooms.
PandaMaru: I honestly can't wait to use these.

Scythuz: Ahhh this track is way epic.

Slimmeiske2: These are so cute haha. tbh the zombie ones kind of caught me off guard at first.
Tyler Warren: I love this hat and his grumpy crab guy.
Vexed: I can't wait to use these with Horror City since I just got it, woohoo!

tysm everyone! You guys rock!  :rock-left:

I'm always here baby!

Giveaway entry:

A great way to design a character is to think of one important trait, for example, Jim is a serial killer. Now imagine Jim at his highest in this trait. How would he act if he is at his highest? Then you have to think about how he would act at his lowest. Put it all together... and you've got a great character.

Another tip, try to make your RPG not cliche. Don't have a giant talking tree, don't make the game start when the hero wakes up, and don't burn your town down. Also, don't call your game "Tales of ____".

Thank you all for the awesome resources!  :)

Avery - Those lighthouses are amazing! Thank you for giving us a less bedazzled skeleton face, and the mushroom houses and modern tiles are great (those donuts are making me hungry).
Caz - Wonderful stairs, I always have trouble finding good ones. The multiple chairs will make decorating rooms a lot easier now that everyone doesn't have to sit facing the same direction.
Michael Rookard - That battleback is really pretty! You've got a great eye for color.
Ms Littlefish - Thank you for so many sound effects! I've been wanting a scribble sound, and now I've got one~ The only problem is that I can't really hear anything for 'Meg's Noisy Neighbor' (can't tell if it's just my speakers or ears though).
Palladinthug - Mushrooms! I love mushrooms, so thank you for making so many great ones (I just wish I used the retro tiles).
Pandamaru - Your tiles are lovely as usual. The blue in the winter tiles really makes them beautiful, and the crib tiles will be great for adding detail to family houses.
Scythuz - Awesome song, it makes me want to go get into a dramatic battle!
Slimmmeiske2 - Zombie santa is hilarious, and all the sprites are little cuties.
Tyler Warren - So that's what santa keeps under his hat! I love the colors, and want one of my own now.
Vexed - You've given us a ton of amazing tiles, thanks! Seeing more great Pop! tiles always makes me happy.

Hiddenone. That one is unfortunately difficult to hear out of many speakers because it's such a low frequency. Because of that reason, It would be pretty situational for when it could be used; horror games, moments of silence, ect. But, my neighbor's not going to stop making noise any time soon so it's likely I'll be able to capture something else later on. I'm trying to get one of her rattling my light fixtures (she's that heavy a walker) because it will give me a much wider frequency range to play with, thus being applicable to many more soundscapes. I mostly made that effect passive aggressively because she's driving me nuts.

Game design tips:  Always remember, back up often, and if you need inspiration, try watching other devs stream.  I've personally found that watching Driftwood Gaming gets my creativity flowing.

Happy Holidays all!

Edit:  I haven't looked at the resources yet, but regardless if I use any or not, thank you to this community and especially the artists of varying form.  You're the crux of this community, and I thank you for all the work you do for us.

Some tips I've learned are as follow:

1.) Back up often and make a back up copy of your back up too.

2.) If your translating a game into another language some things will not translate well at all and you can't use a literal translation.  Because of this you will need to be prepared to go back and edit things as when you actually look at the final translated project and test play it you discover somethings don't sound right or could be worded better.  You may also be required to explain what something is in a Read Me file too if the game has something that requires some cultural references or notes that even with a great translation is going to be missed.

3.) The single best book you can purchase for any maker game is RPG Maker for Teens, by Michael Duggan if you are completely new to making maker games.  While it is written for VX he does cover in detail lots of things that can be applied to making other games.  (I read all the other books on the Market that I've seen for maker games and this one is still the best and clearest to follow.)

4.) Take a break from your project every now and then.

5.)  Do be afraid to ask questions no matter how stupid it may seem.  There are only stupid people and no question is stupid to ask.  Some questions may seem stupid to some  but they are actually not be when it is looked at.   When I took technical writing and in my legal writing classes it was made clear to every one that quite often something that appears straight forward may not be when you look carefully at it.

6.) Get a copy of the The Writer's Digest Character Naming Source book, 2nd edition,  by Sherrilyn Kenyon, it will be huge help in naming characters.

Also the Writer's Digest website has lots of free articles that can help you out.

7.) Writing for a game is not the same as writing for a novel, movie, or TV.  Your dialog needs to be be short and to the point in a game and you want to show not tell things to the player.  Most players are not going to want to have to do multiple clicks to read through a lot of dull text to just get some info on the setting or when they interact with a character and what they need to be told can be said in a sentence or two instead of a bunch of show text events.  If you want to have detailed long  background stuff they can read through have that show up in books they can find and read if they want to instead of making them have to go through a bunch of text events.   (Also, it is easier to make this stuff into pictures of text  that show up when you show a picture instead of using  text events.)

8.) Start small and build on your game from that.  Figure out what you need exactly and add on after you get the core stuff you need done.  You can always go back and edit things so that any additions mesh better.

Hmm neat trick.. Well, you can make a really amazing animated title screen (like in Escalia) without the use of scripts, it's all eventable :) and a lot more customizable than a script. Might do a tutorial one of these days.

Vexed Enigma is now my favorite RPG Maker artist! I can't wait for more of his tilesets. Vexed, if you are reading this, please make hospital, laboratory, military base tilesets.

Oh look like I won't gonna miss this. Well here my tip for ya.

If you gonna modify the character generator. Have both Desktop and Steam version. And use the desktop version for your modification to avoid being removed because of steam updates.

If you planning to release a game in multiple ports. Have different version of the same resources with the same name and just replace with a smaller or larger version to make porting easier instead of going around your game and replace or modify the size of it to fit on the current resolution.

Edit:

Well here a tip, And hopefully shaz will like it since that previous Status Update.

- if you going to make a help topic PLEASE AVOID USING JUST SIMPLE Topic title Like "Help me", "How to Use, etc.. Be creative in making your topic title like "Need help understanding how to edit a resources","What is the best resolution for a game" it's easier for anyone to see and help quickly .

Hi, happy holidays :)

And a small tip:

Think before you do, especially when you build complex events like sneaking missions.

......Well, it's just me, but I tend to use events instead of scripts (I'm not totally good at it), so I often have trouble when I want to add extra events and switches.

Another tip:

Using other softwares is sometimes convenient. I recently started using Excel to make lists about items and skills, and found it's a good way.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
