I'm trying to have a stealth mechanic to gain the upper hand during battles by sneaking up behind an enemy, but I'm having issues trying to get both sides of it working at the same time.

Getting spotted needs a parallel trigger to continually scan for the player in front of them, but starting the battle from behind them needs an action button trigger, which makes one of them cancel out.

Is it possible to have simultaneous triggers? or is there a way to do this with scripts or something?

Can you have a separate parallel event controlling your enemy NPC and handling the scanning?
Then your enemy NPC can have action button trigger.

The other option is to use Yanfly's Event Chase Player plugin. This allows you to set a chase radius and the requirement to be able to see the player, and that goes into the event's custom move route. So the event overall can still be Action Trigger.

This is what I ended up going with, thanks for the suggestion!

There is also Galv Event Start Types but wacky things happen if you use it in a parallel event. i.e. an action trigger command will run over and over again

Maybe it can be mediated with wait commands, I haven't tried it
