Hey everyone! Like we all know some of the top voted games have been suspected of cheating and so forth with a sudden burst of votes in short period of times, but that's not what I want to talk about here.

As I played through Hellmut I noticed something familiar. The picklocking system, that is used in Hellmut is almost identical to the one used in the games of Bethesda Softworks. Games most of you know, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas and TES: Skyrim.

Here is the footage from Hellmut:

Now compare it to Fallout: New Vegas:

Both are very similiar, right? What's going on here?

I havent played it...but a lot of games 'borrow' systems from each other. Think of how many games came out after gears of war that had similar cover systems or how many games straight up copy halos control scheme

I don't think it's a good idea to have a discussion about that similar system things. It seems too... far-fetched.

The only point of that game is just amount of heavy votes. Others are fine to me. Suitable horror, suitable game play factors.

^This. It's not really plagiarism to borrow a gameplay feature of another game. If it was, than 90% of games made in RPG Maker would have plagiarized content.

But...that's how you pick a lock. I don't understand the "controversy" here.

If that's the case, then we should accuse Bethesda of plagiarizing the lockpicking system from Thief: Deadly Shadows.

Quite a few games, I believe, have used very similar systems. Two Worlds 2, for instance, which I've been playing a bit of lately.

Anyway, don't think you can really avoid similarities in story and/or features. I know that I'm tempted to use one mechanic I saw in an rpgmaker game, but I don't know whether I will or not.

There are many games that have lockpicking systems. There are only so many ways to portray it. And I'm not sure there's a problem borrowing concepts from other games anyway - especially if it's a single, brief puzzle in a game that goes for an hour or more.

If we're not allowed to borrow ideas from other games, there might not even be a single game out there right now that wasn't charged of plagiarism... and I'm talking not just about RM/indie games but even AAA games

borrowing the idea for the system is different than directly copying the system (which would then be plagiarizing I think)

One method of picking locks is the Bump Key. It's basically a key filed down to the point where hitting the key with a hard blunt object causes the pins in the lock to jump.

explains this process.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
