Hello there! My name is Eugene(Gene) and I am quite new to everything about RM: The community, the software, the forum etc... I have VX Ace that I bought on sale but I didn't like it much so I didn't do much with it. The biggest turn-offs from it were that you can't have side view battles and that it uses RGSS3 that is even rarer/harder to learn than Ruby which itself doesn't have many resources. I'm looking into the new upcoming RM: MV. It's because it has the option to use side-view battles, can be used on multiple platforms and uses the popular Javascript language. I have some experience with programming but not with these languages(JS, Ruby). I'm thinking in getting MV. But how will I know I would be able to use it and to create actual video games on it? I want to also learn how to use the software well, later maybe learn the JS language for it and create a game that will also profit. How can I do those? I'm thinking in creating a short demo first for the game and have others review it. Is that a good idea? I want to work in a team for myself or for others. I will need a game designer and story writer as staff at least. And they must work within what RM can do. A manager would be nice too. How can I get all those?

You can start by following the first link in my signature (starting point), it'll answer some of your questions and guides you to the tutorials to learn the engine.

However, the best way to learn what is needed for going commercial is to complete a free game - you can't really expect to know what to do for commercial success until you know every stage of game making including the bughunt.

And that will take time - making a halfway decent game takes a minimum of six months of work, often 1-2 years (some experienced developers can create 2-3 games per year, but those have the experience of previous successfull games and are working fulltime on game making)

And your first game will never have the quality needed for commercial success, simply because it's your learning project - so don't waste time by trying to make your first game commercial.

You don't need to know scripting languages to use the event commands to make an actual game.

Hello!

When I started using RM I was a total noob. I was going to abandon ship the first day I opened that software, because it looked scary (never encountered scripts before), but I thought - "Hey, there for sure should be something on the internet" and found script list and such - started using, configuring, learning and now I know how to crash my game!

Don't worry, just spend some time and you'll get all of this.

Welcome to the herd and good luck! (=

Hey so I read Andar's guide and just one question: Should I practice making video games on the RM VXA that I already own or should I await RM:MV to come out? If RM:MV is so much different than VXA then I wouldn't want to study VXA for nothing.

Go ahead and practice with Ace.  There are probably going to be differences but there's always been an element of familiarity between engines that make it easier to learn a new one if you've used an older one.  It's only a few weeks until the release, I can't imagine you getting so used to Ace that any of that time would be wasted.  Well, unless you were getting into learning Ruby for it.   ;)

Well, everything will be pretty similar between Ace and MV, except scripting, which will be totally different.

...So, working with Ace will not be a waste.

Also, please note this forum is for introductions and getting-to-know-you.  If you have questions about how to do things, or want to recruit a team, there are specific places where you need to post for those.  Take a few minutes to have a look around and see what's where.  Posting in the right place will get you the attention you want/need faster (and avoid the attention you don't want/need).

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
