Finally decided to make a forum account, hello!
I'm an artist making games in RPG Maker MV and RPG Maker 2003. I have minimal coding experience.
I've never actually published a game before, but I have been messing around in the engine for a few years.
I want to become a fiction writer one day. I use RPG Maker to tell the stories I come up with.
My main inspirations when making games are Persona, Etrian Odyssey, and Paper Mario. (depends on the project)
I've always loved games like Etrian Odyssey that let you make your own characters.
Disgaea also caught my attention recently because I heard you could do something similar with custom units. I thought the monster designs in that series were cool.

Back to RPG Maker- While I'm putting a lot of time into my main project, I've been wanting to make some shorter side projects for more experience in writing and game design. If and when I do post something, feedback would be much appreciated!

What do you think a good "small project" would look like? Where should I start out?

Something like a basic RPG (Take into account that it is what I consider small)
- One map challenge (try and keep everything into one map)
- 3-5 Battles
- Basic events

I'd attempt a short collisuem game where all your events take place in one map and allows you to create simple events and the main focus is just combat with some small story events in-between. Nothing too big or grand but one space for you to practice everything need to know from shops, battles, cutscenes, events, common events, etc

You don’t even necessarily need to do a small project. I have several open projects where I just experiment with things to learn, practice, experiment, and explore.

I started by recreating tutorials and them started exploring and making tutorials of my own.
