Any specific reason you guys decided to make the help file a bunch of html pages instead of the regular help files, like the previous RPG Makers? I'm not sure I really like the new format. I can't search for a term in all help pages, like I could before... so if I want to find help about a specific thing, I have to click on every item and hope I find it... it's kinda silly Or maybe there's a better way to do that which I'm not aware of?
Nope, it's all browser based now. I suppose they figured since MV runs on the web, so too should the manual. You can press F1 to open it, but it sounds like you managed to get that far.
The program runs locally, the games can be run on a browser... :/ You can use a grep program to search through the help page files to find the word you're looking for, but that's still pretty stupid (and it can be even worse if the word you're searching for happens to match the terms used to build the web page, like CSS elements and stuff)...
Yes, I meant MV games. You can easily use your browser's find function (Ctrl + F / cmd + F) to searh for the topic name you want, and then you can use it again to search the contents of that topic.
The issue is that I don't know if I'm searching for is a topic or not. It's just a word. Like "font". The help file talks about fonts, but it's not a topic... if it weren't for grep, it'd have taken me forever to find it
Yeah, I had a hard time coming to grips with it when I first started using it. Still not entirely comfortable, but the more you use it, the easier it will get. I miss the 3 tabs at the top - never used the middle one, don't even remember what it was for
Usually in help files, the middle tab just shows a huge list of terms used in the help file... not very useful in many situations... I don't see this help file becoming easier to use, unless I start memorizing terms that appear in each topic page, so I wouldn't have to browse everything... but again, grep helps with that
I haven't checked their quality, just a quick google search: http://sourceforge.net/projects/chmprocessor/ http://www.online-convert.com/file-format/chm The regular help files are just converted HTML-Files, so you can try to convert the manual yourself to get a searchable version (or even a PDF)
How are you guys getting this to open in a way that you can read it? Mine opens in Open Office and is just a bunch of nonsense. This thread makes me think that it's because it's html rather than text, but how do I open it in, say, firefox or chrome? I want to know the graphic size specs so I can make some custom tilesets and sprites and whatnot. In the other RPG Maker I had, I think it was Ace? That information was available in the help file, but now I can't get the help file to open.
Try going to RPG Maker MV\Help folder and set index.html to open as either firefox or chrome if you can. (The Right Click Command) or Try opening it manually through firefox/chrome.
Probably changed because there's very limited chm support on Mac / Linux since they wanted MV to be multiplatform they used HTML instead
