Ive downloaded a few icon sets but they all have the icons in a single image, and from what I know, I cant choose the icons that I want from it inside the program. So, how can I separate them in multiple files or is there any other way to make it work?

You can't choose your icons from multiple files. It must all be in a single file.

However, that file has no size limit, so you can have an infinite number of icons. So you will need an editing software (GIMP is free, powerful and easy to use) to combine manually the different files. Your only restriction is that icons must all be 28x28 (I believe that is the size in XP) and there are only 16 (not sure about the exact number, but it's the number of icons on a single row by default) per row. But you can have as many rows as you want. So basically the file's width never changes, but the height can be infinite (always a multiple of 28 though).

EDIT: Correction, what I said is true for VX, VX Ace and MV, but not for XP (it has been a long since I used XP). I'm terribly sorry, follow Shaz's advice (below this message).

This is true for VX, Ace and MV, but the OP is using XP, and XP has each icon as a separate image.

You will need to use an image editing program to separate them. GIMP and Paint.net will do this for you, but it's a lot of manual work. I believe Photoshop might be able to do it with a macro.

@Shaz Ohh true! Sorry about that! It has been a long time since I used XP, and I didn't really use it for long (VX was release a bit after I started using XP).

Ohh, thats bad... Im using the Yanfly Icon Generator to create and export 24x24 files, but the counterpart is that I have to create the icons or use the default ones, which are pretty limited...

OR!!!!!

Use a script.

VX iconsets in XP

This little snippet allows you to use IconSets instead of single files for icons, just like VX. Easy to install and easy to use.

Tired with cluttered Icon graphics in RMXP? This script makes the game load icon graphics from VX / VXA iconset.

These will do the reverse, allow you to use iconsets rather than force you to separate the individual icons.
