Hello everyone! This is my first post here, and I would much appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction in making the depth in the attached picture of cliffs smoother or more natural looking. I'm not sure if there is any tiles for it included in just the basic VX ace set, but if there are it would be nice if someone a bit more knowledgeable than me could help me find them :) . Thanks in advance!

Variation is your best friend. Make some cliffs three tiles high, others two, and others even one. Shift-Click some sections of cliffs so that you can create underlying (sort of terraced) dropoffs. You can even make a 3-way system with the default RTP tilesets, and have one area be the lowest portion, then go up a tier, like you currently have, and then make a third tier to add some depth and variation to your mapping.

Having the lower ground the the upper ground use the same tiles makes it look like the cliff was actually a barrier... and personally,I don't like the blending of the stairs...

and as Arin said, you might need to shift_click some of the parts and probably try to not always use the default look of the RTP tiles...

like on the cliff directly to the right of the stairs, the cliff of it's right would probably look more natural if you use the upper cliff tile for it's lower-left border (on the border between the two cliffs)

same with the border between the 1st and 2nd cliffs (counting from left to right)

and use shadows to make it look more natural too...

First of all, thank you for your fast replies! I am still fairly new at this, but I want to make sure I make quality games right off the bat too :) . If you don't mind, could you tell me (if any) which separate tile sets are used for most projects in general? I feel a little limited by the basic sets, so tile sets might make the project look quite a bit better :) . Right now, I am in the process of following your tips of multi-depth layers and terracing, and I must say the whole map looks much better! Thank you for your time as well, I appreciate your help very much!

it depends on what look you want... but for RTP-blendable tiles... I suggest finding Mack's/FirstSeedMaterial's tileset (free to use)... you can also buy additional packs like the DS and DS+ sets...

anyway, for finding resources, look at Granny's list first

Thank you both so much for your help! I will try your suggestions, and hopefully this will turn out much better than originally planned!

Back in action to develop the indie game that has been long overdue... Final Fallacy. A game that keeps on giving! The development never ends as the developer thinks to be the smart cookie by coming back and beginning by saying... "Oh bother, this indie game has been long overdue..." How could one resist such? To whom ever person or persons who re-did the DS/DS+ asset packs for MV (as in, they are all 48x48, and not just x2 the pixel scale) .... THANK-YOU!!!!!!!!! XwwwwX
