Hi!
First things first, my name is Riya (Pronounced ree-yuh) but I go by Tai on here just for funsies (either works though). I just got RPG Maker MV during the last steam sale (like a week ago) and I've already sunk over 60 hours into it! (A number that probably seems tiny compared to those who've been making games for years). I've been enjoying myself so much playing around with it! I even have some interesting story ideas to turn into games already! Right now, however, I'm just working on a simple light story to try and figure out how to use everything in RM. Its pretty bad, but also pretty good considering I've only just started lol. Anyway, I wanted to ask those more veteran game makers (and players) about what things make a good game to them? What should I focus on the most when I start a more serious game? Art style? Fighting? Story? Music? and why? Also what should I steer clear of doing? And maybe what are some things you wish you would have known starting out?

Thanks so much and feel free to PM me for whatever reason!
-Taireah (Tai, Riya, Whatever)

I'm sort of in the same boat as you! My advice is make sure your story is super fleshed out and the way you exactly want it to be! Otherwise you have to keep going back and changing stuff T_T !!!

Welcome and have fun!

That said my first advice is to just do that : have fun! And get to know the engine and how everything works with this minor project. Get comfortable with the engine and get comfortable here on the forum.
Once you've done that it's time to start a bigger more serious project.

Thats my two cents anyway xD

Yeah I've noticed that too so far! I don't mind doing that with the story i'm on rn just because its probably not going to see the light of day! lol. But In the future I'll be working off of pre written short stories I think. Do you have any idea of the types of games you wanna see more of? (I'm always looking for inspiration!)

I would say play around with all the event commands and see what the engine is capable of right out the box. When you know what you can do, you can make more progress at any given time. If you have to keep stopping to learn a new event command to make the scene/event/feature you'd like you're going to slow way down. But like Finnuval said, focus on what is fun for you. Make the game you want to make, make the game you would play.

I think it'll be a while before I get comfortable with everything that RPG Maker has to offer! There's so much to learn and youtube tutorials have become my best friend haha! I'm so glad finals are almost over with so I can work on this without worrying about coursework! Thanks for your two cents!

Yeah it can take a while but the benefit of this forum is that a lot of tutorials can be found here too, asking questions is always good andd ppl usually are nice and patiënt enough to answer in a way you ccan understand xD
And remember there is no rush to make your game. Take aslong as you need :)

Oh! Thats a good idea to make the game I'd like to see out there. Thank you for that advice! So far Ive been working in chunks like : get the mapping done, then place the NPCs, then dialogue, etc. I worry that I'll forget how to do all of the commands if I do it all at once! But its also good to try new ways of doing things so I'll give it a go! (just maybe in a different file lol)

Hi, and welcome to RPG Maker.

My advice is to not compare yourself to other makers when you put out a game. As you said you're just getting started, your first project will be how you get a good grip on the software with practical uses. And the learning process won't even stop at that first project!
The forum is a great place to get help when you can't wrap your head around how to make something happen. Sometimes clever eventing will do the trick, sometimes you can just pop a plugin into your game.

For now, just do what you like. Have fun with the whole thing. And screw it if you stick with the base resources for now. What are people going to do about it? Sue you? That's right, they can't do anything about it.

We all had our first crappy projects, whether they were taken down out of embarrassment of not, and whoever says they haven't is a damn liar.

haha yeah but some folks here have been since the start, some a little longer and some are fresh blood like yourself. So there really isnt any catching up only self-improvement.
And like @CHKNRAVE says don't compare yourself or what you do to others. This goes for every aspect of game-making (and life really) as it leads to nowhere xD

And always remember that only you can tell your story ;)

Thank you for your advice! In regards to your last bit I'm already feeling the cringe/ embarassment from this one and I have like three characters (that speak and move). lol

Yeah, you'll figure it out! Trial and error, don't be too afraid to fail or too proud to ask for help.

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
Do you Find Tilesetting or Looking for Tilesets/Plugins more fun? Personally I like making my tileset for my Game (Cretaceous Park TM) xD
