That xray script is pretty neat. But not what I'm looking for because it wouldn't make the other tiles around the player visible when walking behind a building. That way you can't see where you are walking (you might walk into a gap/trap). But I will use the script anyway for other purposes I think

I tried it. It works just as well as using a parallax overlay for me. But I'd have to make a script that automatically removes the picture when I leave the map. Yami's parallax script can do this already for parallax layers. Without using any scripting at all, your method might just be the best method there is. But I decided that I'd go with Yami's parallax scrtipt and draw the layer on top of the regular tiles instead.

Doesn't matter. As long as you keep in mind that the top-left corner will most likely be put at the 0,0 coordinate of the map.
