Hi, newbie to RPG Maker VX Ace here. I was wondering how do I make a side scrolling game in the style of Lisa: The painful? My main issue is I do not know how to get the sprites/landscape/general 2D side scrolling look Lisa has.
I found this tutorial -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-sz6iUmfLc&t=242s
But it doesn't look completely 2D like Lisa does. It's still semi up-down perspective. The character's feet clip into the floor like the up-down perspective normal does, not how it looks completely flat like in Lisa.

Thanks for the help!:kaoluv:

The problem with the example in the tutorial is that they are using default assets.
To do a platformer style (and it can be done, I've seen them) you need to make graphics specifically for it. So, for example, those top down stairs will never work.

For example, see this trailer which has platformer sections, and compare it with the normal graphics of other parts of the game.

Ah, so if I make my own sprites(example in a Lisa style) it would fit the Lisa style/layout?

It's not the sprites. In fact there's no need to make different sprites. Take another look at that trailer. It's the same set of sprites in the platformer sections as in the ordinary sections. However, you will see that the tiles are flat, you cannot use the default style tiles to make your maps. Those are the graphics that you need to make. Having said that, there are a lot of true 2D graphics out there, (RPGMaker uses 2.5D) many of which are free, so you could use some of those if you can find any which fit your game.

Making the graphics isn't my issue(as I can draw and want to make my game entirely out of my own art) I'm just confused how to get flat tiles for the 2D style I need... if I just draw the flat ground like in Lisa will it show up flat like in lisa? How come the lisa sprites don't have the slightly up-down look?(srry for all the questions, mega noob here, thanks for helping!) Do I have to make single flat tiles for the ground(like how you place ground tiles) or do I pre-make the backgrounds, and just add transparent blocks for the character to walk on?

Okay, I've never made a side scroller myself, but...
yes, if you want the full 2D like Lisa visuals, then you will have to make flat sprites as well.
You could pre-make the backgrounds and then show them as parallax maps, but that will cause your file size to balloon enmormously. I would make the tiles totally flat - when you think about it walls in both default and Lisa style are the same. The only difference would be in the 'ground' tiles and in Lisa style you don't see the ground as such, just a line that they walk on. So your ground tiles would be mostly transparent, with just a thin whatever at the bottom, with the 4-directional passabilities set so that you can only go left and right, not up and down. Climbing would be done by setting the graphic for the rope/whatever with the ladder tag. Jumping you would do with an event set to Beneath character, player touch, a conditional to check which way the player is facing and then the jjump command.

Hi! Thanks for replying, I tried what you said about making it paralax, but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm using RPG Maker VX ace, I tried a tutorial I found on how to make the BG paralax, but it required a plugin. Can't seem to get the plugin to work ;____: RPG maker VX ace seems way dif than RPG maker mv
Would you know how to get plugins to work in VX ace? I've been trying to find tutorials but I'm honestly getting nowhere and feeling like a chicken without a head tryin' to figure it out
This is the plugin I tried to get to work-http://mvplugins.tordamian.com/plugins/bind-pictures-to-map/

Quick answer - Plugins are for RPG Maker MV. Scripts are for RPG Maker VX Ace
