Has anyone been bored enough to figure out what the distance of the default 20x15 map size is equivalent to in feet? Both North the South and East to West?

The default is actually 17x15, but I'd say a tile is about a metre. Tough one, though, since object sizes vary and the typical two-tile-high houses suggest in that instance, the houses are two meters high and a person is only a metre high.

Maybe that's why some people find chibis odd?

I'd say something to the tune of 60x45 feet - making the simple guesstimate of three feet to a tile. Increase by an appropriate number of magnitudes for the world map.

I think you forget we technically view things at an angle - you could probably easily add about 50% to the height estimates.

17x15? Weird. When I start a new map it shows 20x15 as the size by default. Am I missing something?

Different defaults for different version makers - XP and VX Ace have different default map sizes, I believe.

RMMV
And technically Ace is 17 x 13. But yes, we are talking different makers here.

3 feet per tile seems like a pretty good guestimate.

Oh yeah! So that does suggest about a metre per tile. Because with the angle, you'd be losing a little vertical height.

I'm glad somebody brought this up because I was going to. I've just been generalizing everything but I have some "grand scale" moments which got me wondering how big a tile is. My tallest character just happened to be 224cm (yay for easy math by fluke) but is 64 pixels high in RM but that's only because, with a 640x480 screenspace I find using more than 2 tiles for height gives very little realestate to work with on screen.

I'm currently using 3 ft x 3 ft for inside maps (taverns, houses, etc), 6 ft x 6 ft for towns and dungeons, and 1 mile x 1 mile for the world map. That does mean though that one tile on the world map is about 880 tiles on a town map. Maybe it is a good thing I don't have them walk all of that!

Or give everyone Chun Li legs from all that walking.

Maybe since my overworld maps for RM are still in their infancy I should consider using actual ratios like you did rather than just going with whatever looks good.

Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
