I want to what your project, whether it be music, game project, scripting, etc to you. How high on the priority scale is it? I some time find myself prioritizing my project over my responsibilities sometime. Like I may skip making a big meal for dinner and chose to just make a sandwich. I also am contently thinking about one of my three hobbies. Rather it be the animation for the game I am working on, the music for a game project or a clients website. It does somewhat act as a motivator when I am at work. I say to myself work hard and the day will fly by.

So I want to hear your thought about your project/projects. How much you think about it, and how it effects your life.

Yeah, I will skimp on food and just have something basic, so I can get back to work. Luckily, my husband does the cooking, so nobody else in the house suffers from my addiction. That may change though once I start working from home - he might expect me to pull my weight, or something silly like that.

For me, my RPG maker projects tend to be a "if I have free time/don't feel like doing work" thing, much the way I treat playing videogames. It's a way to procrastinate, relax, or just do something I enjoy. I don't think I've ever skipped a meal to work on a project... unless I was planning to snack while working, of course.

Your lucky you have your husband to cook. I have my brother. But since we alternate nights on who cook. So if it happen to be my day to cook and I am in a middle of a project, I struggle to pull my self away. Then I have that little reminder in my head, if you don't cook you will starve. So at that point I either makes a sandwich or force myself to cook.

@mjshi

I kind of do the same thing, if I go to work i believe I have earned my time to work on my projects. I can't bring my self to snack because I am like a robot when it comes to meals. I cook when I wake up, then I cook dinner between 3 to 4, depending on the complexity of the dish.

It changes all the time for me. Sometimes I can go weeks or months without touching my project. Other times I may work on it for an hour or two a day. Then there are also periods when I'm no-lifing it and work on it for 10+ hours a day.

My game projects give me a sense of purpose in life. Game-making is something I enjoy very much because it lets me tell stories in the way I feel does them justice. Now that I've also gone commercial with some of my projects, they're not just a hobby anymore, but also a career path that I've chosen to make a living out of.

At the moment, I'm in the same boat as mjshi, although not quite exactly. The very same game plot that pushed me this far is on hiatus now. Mostly because I'm struggling with university and an engineering project (and get tired quite easily). I have decided not to give up on it, though, no matter how long it takes for me to finish it. It would make me feel like a murderer to bury all the characters I created for no reason at all. It just feels like this huge dollop of laundry that I must get done some day, so I sit and stare at it sometimes to remind myself that it's still there (did that make any sense?)

Anyways, I guess on a scale of 1-10 on importance, my current project would score a 6.

Music and gam mak is basically what gives my creativity a drive. I love them and it also gives me a sense of meaningful purpose in life. Even though they're just hobbies, I still value them deeply. My dream in life, ever since I was a kid, was to make my own game. That dream and urge to finish what I started, they were so strong. I remember working on my first game 17 hours a day in the later stages of development. At that point, all things not gam mak was basically eat, shower/answer to nature calls and sleep. Finishing my first game and fulfilling that dream, it was really something (I sometimes think back about and can't believe that I actually did it).

I guess you can compare my game to the ring from LotR; it became heavier and heavier as time went by. Even when I wasn't working on the game, it would still be there, haunting my mind, reminding me that I hadn't finished it yet.

Music is a pretty similar story. I still have dreams, like becoming a composer for video games and/or movies/television. Those dreams and goals still keep motivating me to fulfill them to this very day. I think I speak for many when I say that I'd ultimately love to be able to turn my hobbies into my livelihood. As hard as it may be, I will never give up, whatever anyone tells me. Not ever!

Usually I work on it if I have no other commitments, unless something unfortunate like having my main computer short out happens.

I back up so I'm not worried about losing files.

For me, it depends on whether I'm motivated or not.

When I'm motivated, I can easily spend 8+ hours per day on scripting(or even 12+ hours per day if I do become really obsessed and passionate with it) when I've that much free time(but I seldom ever sacrifice any other part of my life except sleeping), and my motivation can last for several weeks.

When I'm demotivated, I can easily abandon scripting entirely(unless there are scripting requests, bug/compatibility reports or something else that I've to handle as soon as I can) for several weeks until I'm motivated again.

I've long observed that my motivation cycles are usually in weeks lol

To me, scripting is extremely important, but nowhere to the point that it'll be my entire life. Now my 1st reason for scripting is to be a better programmer(and I've indeed improved a due to that), as I'm becoming more and more interested in this career, even though I'm still not a full time programmer yet XD

Your project seem to vary based on the situation. But when you do work on, wow your really work on it.

@Matseb2611

Game making is a form of art, no matter how many people may disagree. Yes I love a game with rich story so your type of game would definitely interest me. Your craft giving your purpose in life is a good thing to see because I thing you will make a better quality game because it come from your heart and soul.

@Valkyinet

It is nice to see that despite your schedule you are not willing to give up on your project. That is a good trait to have. I hope in the near future you will be able to continue your project so i can see how your game is like.

@luiishu535

It good that your hobbies provide propose to your life. It must feel very satisfying when you accomplish a great feet in your game or you compose a great song. Well I hope you can make a living out of this passion of yours. I believe we all deserve that.

@Dekitas

Explain what scripting meant to you in code was very cleaver and made stop to really look at it and all it was trying to tell me. This tell me exactly how important scripting is to you.

@TheOriginalFive

It is good that you prioritize your time wisely.

@DoubleX

Your story about motivation sounds some what similar to mine. That why I always joke that if I get bored of one of my hobbies I have my other two hobbies to keep me busy. Yeah motivation in general can play a big role in what you do. I have found that if I am not interested in a project is unmotivating and it hard to work on the project. Yes your hobby should not consume your life as you stated, you should coexist with it.

so hopefully tomorrow i get to go home from the hospital i've been here for 5 days already and it's driving me mad. I miss my family like crazy but at least I get to use my own toiletries and my own clothes. My mom is coming to visit soon i can't wait to see her cause i miss her the most. :kaojoy:
Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
