Hm. A few things to consider-
*Why a sword? or Why a knight-style broadsword or katana?
There are many kinds of swords, and in a fight between someone with a staff and someone with a blade, the one with the staff won't always lose. Despite the trope, staves were not used exclusively to focus a magician's power.
*Archery takes strength.
Don't let The Legend of Dragoon fool you- to use a longbow you have to be capable of pulling 100 pounds or more.
*Is your character entirely human?
It's an accepted fact- cross-species children do show up in fantasy. Yes, yes, the Great Hero is usually supposed to be human, but there's nothing to say yours can't be half elf or distantly related to a dragon.
