How to create diffrent types of tools?

So my game is heavily focused around on outside of battle gathering, right now I am trying to create the tools needed to preform these actions. My questions are this;

  1. What do I make a tool? Do I make it a weapon, or an armor? They won't be used in battle but in the world itself.
  2. What things should I consider in the data base?
  3. How do I make it so these tools don't effect the little battle system I do have?
Note: I am using some of yanfly's plugins but have yet to really explore them so maybe I'm just missing something.

When I make gathering/mining mechanics that require tools i make them Items
Then use conditional branches on the mining/gathering nodes that require to have the tool.
Set the occasion in the item database for the tools to menu screen and they wont affect battle at all.

Or just make them as unusable, and preferably key items.. You're never gonna use them anyway as you're just checking in the event if they exist in the inventory.
