How to make screen look bigger in VX Ace

So hey :B I've been working on my game and I've also watched some japanese ones (Mermaid Swap, Mad Father, etc) and I noticed that games made on Wolf RPG Editor look "bigger or "buffier". Anyone has any idea how to make games look like this in VX Ace? (posting image):

I thought about them making the sprites larger, but it's impossible in VX Ace.

Not really... You can create sprites of any size and still use it in VX Ace... though with only the picture shown, it's hard to determine what they did...

But I don't know how to make VX Ace detect custom character sprite sizes OWO

As long as the frames are correct, Ace auto-detects sprite size...

If its a single character sheet, it should be have 3x4 frames and it should have the $ sign before it's name (like $char1) to make Ace recognize that it only has 1 character in it

ARE the sprites actually bigger, or have they just changed the screen resolution?


That image is 640x480, which can be achieved by editing your scripts, and in the Main script, adding the following line before the rgss_main line:

Graphics.resize_screen(640, 480)

from the looks of it, the sprite looks larger than the default RTP sizes

I compared on photoshop (both on fullscreen) and they're the same size owo

anyway, the resize window method doesn't do stretching so it won't really make things look bigger...

OOH... Full screen mode by default stretch things up... at least from my tests using blank RM projects and from the RM games that I tried to play at FS mode

Yeah, but I also tested Ace on fullscreen and it didn't look quite big :/

maybe they employed some kinda of zoom script too or a fullscreen script as I've seen some here too... can you post a screenshot of how the normal Ace games on fullscreen look in your comp?

BTW, you did actually run the game in that screenshot right?

The tiles are all 32x32. Maybe that game is just using larger character sprites.

The sprites ARE larger indeed... I tried to open it up on Paint.net and overlay the RTP sized sprites and it is indeed larger

I really doubt that they used one... The sprite and tiles look all customized so it's not really hard to think that they simply created their own sprites to make it look like that

Wait a minute. You're not even talking about a game made with RPG Maker. So it's entirely possible that that's just the way the sprites look, and they haven't done ANY kind of zooming or resizing at all.


If you want big sprites, make big sprites. If you want to zoom, find a zoom script. In fact, I wrote a script that lets you zoom events without affecting the map. I probably haven't posted it here - it's a bit finicky.


What exactly do you want to achieve? I initially thought you wanted to make the window bigger. Is it JUST the characters you're wanting to be bigger and more pixelly? No matter how you do it, you're going to run into the 'head cut off' issue when below a tile set to 'above player'.

They did, because the sprites that come with Wolf editor look like this
