Volrath's point about how your avatar effects how others perceive you got me thinking...

I...kind of perceive myself on a site based on my own avatar. It's more like, when I go back and read one of my own posts, sometimes it seems "off" because...it doesn't "match" my avatar!

For instance, sometimes it feels weird to share some of my weirder ideas on this site, because my avatar is a cool, badass robot. Well, if my weird ideas are about robots, lasers, or aliens, it sort of fits. But it almost feels weird to talk about magical girls, genderbender shenanigans, or puppies...with my cool gun-toting robot avatar. And I've used all of those things as avatars on other sites! (actually, can't think I've ever used a puppy as an avatar, that needs to be corrected!)

It's like I bring out different aspects, and mildly suppress other aspects, of my personality based on my avatar.

Wow I didn't think much about people that would perceive a person's personality based on their avatar.

I thought avatars were more like pictures to show off and such. I didn't think there was some in-depth feeling into it unless I'm thinking too much on the subject. More or less I don't know how people sees my avatar as or what they think my personality is, but I don't really put too much on the matter because I never thought of it as really important.

Mine isn't all that great.  In fact, it came from a face maker, but I like it still.  It was either this, using troll face or my actual face and trust me.  The community is not ready to see my real face. XD!

Haha. Maybe it's just because I'm a musician, but that was a good one! I can totally relate though. The community isn't ready for my face either... I don't want to scare away potential teammates and work!

I agree. It affects the way I perceive the tone of a post and the personality of the one that wrote it.

As for my avatar, I like to think I'm an sophisticated, old school gamer, and my avatar reflects that. XD

I'm using a spell from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night as my username.. so decided to just add the main protagonist of the same game: Alucard as my avatar.. I dunno, maybe a lack of fantasy or just plain lazy.. In any case I have always been a SotN junkie, and I guess It's the game that represents me the most.. or something.
