I have a map on my story that I want to have random battles on but only after a specific event happens. Is there a way to make it trigger with switches or something, or do I have to replicate the map and set MAP A with no random battles and MAP B with Random battles?

In the event panel, there's a thing where you can turn random battles off at the press of a button. Just turn this off at the start, then turn it on again later.

I've been slowly working on a script that allows you to do this (and other tricks) with switches and variables. Here is the link to the current version (version 0.4): http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/33348-random-encounter-control-version-04-updated-120914/

Just add the notetag <Encounter Switch: 205> to the map you want to be on (replace 205 with whatever switch you want to use, I just used 205 in my game) and turn it ON at game start. Turn it back OFF when you want battles to occur. This way you can also set it up so that some maps have random battles at specific plot points by turning on and off the switches, just as long as you use the notetag on each map affected.

Or, you can use the solution posted above me too. I just prefer the switches as that way I can turn it on and off for individual maps as needed. Admittedly, their solution is simpler too if you are just starting out and don't want more advanced control.

Just make sure to turn on switch 120 at game start if you do use my script. That one is important (until I can edit it more anyways).

I suggest you follow the link in my signature and work through the tutorials there, because it looks like you're very new to the game if you don't know how to create an event (the most important part of any map).
As a short answer. in event mode (which you activate by F6) a doubleclick on the map creates an event at that position and opens the event window where you can enter commands to be executed. One of those commands is the command to activate or deactivate random encounters.

When you get the command window to select the commands, it's on the third tab middle left "change encounter"

Couple hours of work. Might use in my game as a secret find or something. Not sure. Fancy though no? :D
Holy stink, where have I been? Well, I started my temporary job this week. So less time to spend on game design... :(
Cartoonier cloud cover that better fits the art style, as well as (slightly) improved blending/fading... fading clouds when there are larger patterns is still somewhat abrupt for some reason.
