Just out of curiosity, I'm in the process of making a sprite maker  as a side project.  How many of you would be interested in something like this?

that would probably depend on the functions you implement - there are already a number of tools available for sprite generation.

Please list what you plan to implement in that sprite maker.

The point is, it's HTML5.  Not flash. and in browser editor.

I am talking more of a photoshop type feature program. Select color, and a canvas with a grid on it.

That doesn't interest someone asking for a sprite generator.
People looking for a sprite generator are interested only in one thing: the sprites it produces, their versatility and quality.

They don't care if the generator is written in BASIC, HTML or ASSEMBLER, and they don't care if the generator is online or offline (most probably prefer offline because then they can use it anywhere after downloading).

And I suggest you download the Ace Trial and test the Generator included there - if your Generator doesn't have an advantage compared to using that then you shouldn't bother with that work.

One hint: Any artist who can use photoshop to make sprites can easily make the grid in photoshop (or GIMP) themselves.

A sprite generator is only of use to the community if it contains the option of using pre-made components in the sprites.

Most people have problems with the artistic side, not with creating a grid for sprites.

Wrong word.  But it sounds like no one here is interested. Sounds good... later.

If someone does a terrible job at marketing then it's obvious I'm going to think it's a bad product, regardless whether it might be the next best thing since the invention of the internet.

Who is your target audience? Coders who actually might care about how something is implemented?

So are you talking something like the Mack sprite generator?  Go to a website and make a sprite?  I don't think it's a bad idea.  It's convenient and you don't have to worry about downloading anything.  But as others have said, since there is already an in-game generator, you are going to have a ton of generator parts that are unique in order to make it something people find worthwhile.

Personally, I don't like it. because it's internet based. that's all. I personally prefer something downloadable since that means I can bring it anywhere even in places without internet connection...

but anyway, if ur gonna do it, it would really help to have lots of resources to be used... else it won't really be usable

You know there is a save function on your browser.

Everything would be stored in your browser using a manifest file and the localStorage included in javascript which will give you  up to 5mb of space to save your work.  For those concerned about downloading it, I plan on having multiple versions all based in HTML5, but wrapped with a native application. My first step is building it for web though.  Get  a small preview of it here.  Remember, this is a very early work. Most stuff is not working. Pencil, colors, and a very simple fill is programmed so far.  Things I want to implement are layers, rgba settings, marquee tool, shape tools, and so on.

Would there be some particular function that makes this easier to use over, say, paint.NET?

5 MB means it would be lightweight, which is nice I guess.

Here is the coolest thing about it, It's HTML5.  Even if there is no point to me doing this, I'm doing it because.... I can!  lol  This is just a project for me.

That's not cool for everyone, only people who care about how you made the product will have any use for that fact...

so just make sure that it works nice and good, and will work as a good alternative... :)

It's going to be  a big work in progress.  I plan on having the parts you guys are talking about and what not.  Where you can paste them in there, make  your own sprite sheets, make custom sprites with the tools, and so on.  There will also be RGB sliders, filters, and other things you can use.

The only way a sprite maker would be useful to me is if I could easily add my own graphics. HTML 5 is nice because it's cross platform, but in a place like this that's less of an issue.

I think it will be interesting to have a  multi-sprite generator because there's 3 type of charaset that people use :

- RTP style chara

- Kaduki style

- Mack & Blue Chara

Also there is no battler chara generator for Kaduki chara style or Holder chara.

Worse, pose chara creator. simple pose, like running or sitting pose isn't easy to do for newbie but that what most of Rm games lack : living characters.

Anyway, I think the hardest part of a chara creator will be to make graphics that will interest people.
